What we're reading

Trying to remember an old Judy Blume favourite

I remember reading the odd Judy Blume book when I was younger and I really enjoyed them, one in particular, but for the life of me I can't remember the name. Briefly tried googling but hoping you wise lot can help.

From what I remember as a child, the main character grew up around the time of WW2. I think her father might have been a dentist. I remember something at the beginning about playing Cowboys and Indians and also Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The family moved at some point and the girl was convinced a new neighbour was Hitler.

Now I have written it down it sounds blood weird but I loved it when I was young and would like to read it again. Cheers

Can anyone help to identify this one: about a boy called Aldo, I think he had 2 sisters and the theme of the book is about killing animals to eat them. This upsets Aldo and he tries being vegetarian. I think it has a green cover.

Yes, Nicola and Rose are the girls - these a bit where they go to the dance teachers house and she sits on the kitchen table to show her her feet.

I had a book of ballet stories with loads of extracts - that was one, then Drina, then the Sadlers Wells ones with Veronica and Sebastien (but I have most of those separately now).

There are so many YA books I remember reading that I now can't find (some of them not children's but also not YA - teen books?)

Hope House series - about a sort of hostel-cum-hospice type place
The Flying Islands - I read this over and over and can find literally no mention of it anywhere now Confused
Guide to Visting the Moon (or similar) - was very funny again can't find it anywhere!

Yes it was 'Hi There Supermouse'! I loved that book growing up. I hated the younger sister but I remember the the older one dancing on a building site and then a professional dancer spotted her I think. Can't for the life of me remember how it ended but I rooted for the tomboy sister all the way through! I vaguely remember something about sneezing powder Smile

Oh and just downloaded 'Are you there God, it's me Margaret'. Growing up I liked the fact that Judy Blume books discussed a lot of issues whilst still being appropriate for teenagers. I may well be wrong, but I recollect reading somewhere recently that a group was trying to censor them. I hope not!

Ah Polkadots, I can clearly remember the part on that table measuring the feet. I had forgotten until now. I wonder if my parents still have that book anywhere in their house. I remember deciding at a young age that I would get rid of anything I thought I had outgrown. I'm sure my mum and dad were pleased but I wish I had kept hold of a few things

Wondering if my 9 year old is ready for Judy Blume.

If you were to introduce a book of hers, which would it be and at what age?

I remember the hope house series too, there was one about two girls, one with anorexia and one with bulimia but the plot escapes me!
I also loved reading a series of books about a group of teenagers living on an island off the coast of Maine, one was blind and miraculously regained his sight at some point.

Sprink- don't know if you've placed your order yet... but The Book People had a set of the fudge books for a v good price- that's where I got DD's copies from. If you do an advanced search onN, there's usually discount codes floating around too.

hazelnutlatte - the anorexia/bulimia one was written from the perspective of rht bulimic girl. She ran away near the end, ripped her oesophagus overeating at a homeless shelter and when she woke up from the surgery her friend had died from a heart attack Sad.

I weeped through those!

There was a girl with HIV which became AIDs over the course of the book; another girl with cystic fybrosis. One where a promising young artists went blind.

Frickin loved 'em Grin
