I have asked this before for my husband's last birthday but I want to get him a couple of more books for this birthday. He loves intelligent thrillers/spy stories. He's read all of john le carre and most mainstream spy thrillers - anyone got any other ideas?

I quite enjoyed this recently.

There's a follow up too, called 'The Twelfth Department'.

I've just started I Am Pilgrim. Good so far but it is very long.

Forget Le Carre. At the moment, the best author of spy thrillers is Charles Cummings. Start with A Spy By Nature.

Charles Cumming is excellent, but there has not been anything new for ages, or have I missed something?

I tried a Charles Cummings and found the writing style rather pedestrian tbh - didn't finish it.

Not necessarily spies, but Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther series (set in Nazi Germany and the aftermath) are well worth a read.

Years ago now, and I haven't seen them except in the library, there were a couple of thrillers by Gavin Esler (of BBC news fame) which were set in the US, and very good.

Would second Remus on the Bernie Gunther series, especially the first three, and most of the other Philip Kerr novels.

And, while they are not spy novels, I like Douglas Kennedy's novels which read like thrillers. I just read The Memory which I found on the doctor's MacMillan Nurses fundraising trolley for 50p, but I have liked all his books (except the first).

I used to like Douglas Kennedy but went off him, maybe I should give him another try.

My BIL is a big fan of Len Deighton, and Kolymsky Heights by Lionel Davidson is a good spy thriller.
