Glasgow's citywide read - Small Island: anyone participating?

I'm not entirely sure what this is, but I know that there are about 15,000 free copies of Small Island being given away in libraries and Waterstone's (I think), then I think the idea is that everyone reads it and then Andrea Levy comes to Glasgow in February to discuss it. It sounds like a great idea. It's one of my favourite books.

OOh, I wouldn't mind participating, haven't heard / seen naything about it though. Have you seen any copies anywhere yet?

sammac · 04/01/2007 17:34

Hadn't seen anything about this. I'll be in town tomorrow and will be in Waterstone's so will see if there's any around. I read this a few years ago and really enjoyed it

Just finished it. I liked it. It goes from story to story of each character which I ususally hate but she writes it well and I liked the main characters alot.

Found this: Amazing Grace has been chosen as one of three books for the "Small Island Read" initiative in the New Year. There will be a mass read-in in four British cities - Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool and Hull - of Andrea Levy's Small Island. Children will read Amazing Grace and Benjamin Zephaniah's Refugee Boy. The promotion is part of the 200th anniversary of the end of slavery, in 2007.

-and an article in the herald saying that it will be giving away 10,000 copies in January

have a look here

Thanks, Loulee - I was beginning to think I'd imagined the whole thing!

Hi MrsMuddle, I'm in Glasgow and I got my copy today from my local library. They give a copy away when you take out a book. Lots of promotional material but I had to specifically ask for the book and it also came with a readers' guide. I haven't been in to Waterstones in the last week so don't know if they're also doing it.

Edinburgh's is 'Kidnapped'

But I don't think RL Stevenson will be around to discuss it .
