Book club help

This year we decided to run book club on a theme basis

February was "Love" and we read the Ship of Brides by JoJo Moyes (not my choice )

Now we need to think about Marchs book

The theme is "yellow" Shock

I have a few ideas, Yellow Chrome by A Huxley and the Peculiar sadness of lemon cake

Has anyone any other ideas (most of us have read Half a Yellow sun)

It can be loose...so a book about cowardice...or bananas,...or baby chicks Hmm

A little yellow dog by walter mosley

The Yellow Wallpaper and other stories - Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

A book about cowardice - The Kite Runner.

Hope you find something!

RufusTheReindeer · 08/02/2016 19:32

Thank you looking

There are about 8 of us and we are all trying to think of an idea so the person who has to make the decision this month has some help!!

The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers (I think). Very different from JoJo Moyes!

Merrylegs · 08/02/2016 19:39

Fab idea. My book group is always struggling to find reads. This might be a good way to do it. (We all loathed Peculiar Sadness btw. So pleased with itself.) How about something by BananaYoshimoto? She is pretty cool.

sassytheFIRST · 08/02/2016 19:45

Seconding Yellow Wallpaper. Also - randomly - The Secret Life of Bees popped into my head when yellow theme was mentioned...

RufusTheReindeer · 08/02/2016 19:55

I wasnt pleased when we picked the Moyes one...seemed a bit "easy reading"

I will bear that in mind, i thought the premise was good for lemon cake but the reviews are a bit mixed

The Life of a Banana by P P Wong? I haven't read it but it does sound interesting.

Quogwinkle · 08/02/2016 20:43

Or could you stretch it to a novel by Banana Yoshimoto? She is a Japanese novelist. I've read one of her books, called Kitchen (actually two novellas in one volume), which was very good.

RufusTheReindeer · 08/02/2016 20:49

quog

The life of a banana does look good, i will have a better look at it

I did look at kitchen, that looked very interesting but i think the price would put some of the members off

Might have a little look and see if i can find it cheaper as it did look good

The Yellow Admiral by Patrick O'Brian
Crome Yellow by Aldous Huxley
The Yellow Dog by Georges Simenon

or a left field idea
William's Time: Beautiful Young Woman by Yellow Leeds

RufusTheReindeer · 08/02/2016 23:02

Brilliant

Thank you cd

Will have a good look at those tomorrow

You want books on random themes that trigger debate. Our most successful

The circle byDave eggars (Internet use, self inflicted surveillance pervasive Facebook)

Goldfinch (motherhood, crime, art)

Life after life Kate Atkinson (the war, starting life over again etc)

I always google book club questions for each book to trigger debate

annandale · 09/02/2016 00:56

The Bees was quite a good discussion for us - I didn't love it but it was interesting.

antimatter · 09/02/2016 01:31

I would recommend: Half of a yellow sun

One of my favourite books ever.

RufusTheReindeer · 09/02/2016 07:48

Lovely, thanks for all the great suggestions

I would love to trigger debate kerela, but its a bit of a book club lite unfortunately

We have read some great books but the conversation never stays on them for long. I think its because some members have no interest in reading anything too heavy

Just to let you know that we went with

Yellow crocus

In the end

The next theme is "sweet stuff", so that should be easier

OP posts:
Quogwinkle · 11/02/2016 17:32

Maybe Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan then :)

RufusTheReindeer · 11/02/2016 20:35

Ooh i will have a little look

I did say no "the little sweetshop" or"love at the primrose cafe" Hmm

I have made those titles up

OP posts:
Quogwinkle · 11/02/2016 21:17

Or even Sweet Caress by William Boyd. I read that recently, and loved it. Wonderful story :)

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/02/2016 18:04

Let us know what you think of Yellow Crocus Smile
