Irish fiction

Hello!

Just wondering if any of you marvellous people had suggestions for fiction books set in Ireland?

Nothing too heavy would be preferred, I've also tried Cecilia Ahearn but never seem to enjoy them enough to read a second time, if that makes sense?

I love The Dubliners by James Joyce. Its not heavy its short stories.

Also Ardal O'Hanlon's Talk of the Town - hilarious and awful in equal measure. An absolute must read book (I think anyway).

I mean awful not as in awful writing - as in awful stuff happens.

Thank you for the suggestions! I've just finished a Cecelia Ahern book (Where rainbows end) and did like it, despite me saying I wasn't a huge fan!

One of my most favourite books is Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor who happens to be also Sinead O'Connors brother.The book is beautifully written .The Secret Scripture from Sebastian Barry is wonderful.

The Secret Scripture is superb. There are other novels by Sebastian Barry which link to this one. I have The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty on my tbr list. I also loved The Sea by John Banville, which is just exquisite.

I read that two years ago. Literally the worst book set in Ireland I have ever read - clearly written by someone whose idea of Ireland was mostly influenced by leprechauns and a wistful notion of the green, green fields of Ireland. Absolutely hated it.

Ah HowSoJoe, I have to confess I enjoyed that one (and the two sequels ) ... Cheesy but the kind of fluff I'm looking for!

I had no real issue with the story, but the setting drove me mental, OP.
Roisin Meaney is nice and light and fluffy, I like a lot of her books. Maybe The Daisy Picker?

I am currently reading Tara Road by Maeve Binchy. This is the first MB I have read and am very impressed with it so far. Would also recommend Patricia Scanlan.

I liked Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor, Reading in the Dark by Seamus Deane, and Brooklyn by Colm Toibin though none are fluffy, but if the mood strikes differently.

Star of The Sea was brilliant.
The Green Road by Anne Enright was good too.

The graham Norton one , holding, is a good light read. Much better than I thought it was going to be.

One of the best books I have ever read "Star of the Sea" by Joseph O'Conner. The story of a voyage from Ireland to America during the worst of the Great Famine. A murder mystery with a lot of different threads that cantilever together showing the connect between a couple of the starving immigrants in steerage and an upper crust aristocrat in first class. I also really enjoyed "Angela's Ashes". On a lighter note Cathy Kelly and Maeve Binchy's earlier novels.
