What magazines do you read?

Usually the Economist for train journeys, sometimes the New Statesman if the issue looks interesting, but I generally find it rather slight.

Apart from The Land I think most of the things I'd have looked for in a magazine in the past I find online these days. (Thinking of the kind of long serious articles that ran in Marxism Today in the late 80s/early 90s, Ms magazine a little later)

Mostly just the Economist (we have a subscription) although I skip the finance and economics section.

I also have a backlog of National Geographics to read on my iPad.

Radio Times.

I used to read BBC Wildlife but haven't done so much recently.

I'm a member of the Ramblers and the local wildlife trust so read the magazines I get from them.

None unless in hairdressers! Induce avarice and feelings of inadequacy, women's magazines are mostly hateful.

And I always flick through Harper's Bazaar at the hairdressers - so much so that I might ditch my Red subscription as it's really gone downhill and try one for HB.

Women's health and Grazia. I flick through Top Sante. Unfortunately I don't get time to read much.

On the rare occasion I pick up a 'woman's' magazine at the GP or dentist I wonder why anyone spends money on anything so vacuous.

I used to get Country Living so that I could pretend I'd ever live somewhere like that

Back in the day anything and everything. Now nothing at all. A LOT of it is gumf. I dont care if whatsername from towie is buying milk. I dont care

I love their sampler CDs of new music. I've discovered some great stuff from them.

The Artist and the Leisure Painter. Otherwise magazines in the hairdressers or the dentist maybe. Don't touch magazines in the doctor's surgery!!!

I used to buy quite a few magazine years ago, but now I read a lot of stuff on the internet (and have a Kindle) so I don't bother. The other day I was at the train station and wanted something to read a bit more substantial than a newspaper, but shorter than a book, so I browsed through the magazines and was shocked to find how awful and generally dumbed down they have become. Articles are so much shorter than before, and adverts are given even more prominence. I noticed this happening to Cosmopolitan over recent years, and now even Good Housekeeping has gone to pot! Ended up just buying an extra newspaper. Twenty years ago you could read a good magazine for a day or two, and there would be interesting in-depth articles, stories etc. But now they are terrible value for money.

Has anyone else noticed this? (Well I suppose you wouldn't realise if you are younger than, say, late thirties, as you wouldn't know how good they used to be!)

I bought the BBC History magazine for the first time yesterday. Not sure whether I would want it every month but it is quite interesting.

I was having a leaf through Womankind today in WHS and it looks very good, I didn't buy that copy but plan to go back and get it soon, a really interesting thought provoking mix of articles that are different from anything else I have seen. Worth a look.

If I'm somewhere I might need to buy a magazine - airport, train journey - I generally look for something like the Week or New Internationalist. Actually, I usually quite enjoy the in flight magazines on the plane :-)

I used to read loads and spent a fortune, now I can't remember the last time I bought one! Woman, woman's own, Bella, best, red, Cosmo, new woman, she...

But yes they don't speak to me any more, maybe it's age (I'm 43) and I'm not interested in reality or soap TV 'stars'(as I watch neither), make up, dating advice, career advice etc that they're full of!

Perhaps magazine publishers need to fill this niche? On the odd occasion I pick one up at dentist or wherever it's likely to be psychologies, perhaps women's weekly or good housekeeping if they've interviews with actresses/writers or other women I'm interested in.

My interests now are mh, parenting a teen, easy recipes, things to do in school holidays, cinema, reading, politics, charities... I can't think of any magazines that cover a variety of these areas or else are specialist or dumbed down (no middle ground).

Plus I tend to find what I like online.

I download a few free magazines from my County's library.

Currently have BBC History, Countryfile, New Scientist, BBC Wildlife and GoodFood.

I rarely read them tbh, only if I get stuck somewhere killing time. I forget about them. I never buy magazines.

Lavender - it sounds like your county library has a much better selection of magazines than ours. They've only just started doing them and there isn't that much choice online. I had a look for a history magazine and the only one they could offer me was Horrible Histories :o Like you, I'd rather get them for free from the library if at all possible, so will keep checking from time to time.

Mine has quite a few Quog - things like Economist, Good Housekeeping, Prima, Molly Makes, a few other popular womens ones like Red, knitting, quilting, health, Digital and Amateur Photography.

I had an Economist subscription before I found them, that was the only thing I ever paid for.

Amazing though for nil cost. I have to remember to download the whole thing before I leave and to take my iPad with me to actually be able to read them though.

ps. we do subscribe to HH for our 9 year old so I get to read that as well .

I still love to read magazines, reading online isn't the same.

I have subscriptions to GH, Woman & Home, Red, Marie Claire, Top Sante, Oprah, Prima, Essentials, The Week, Psychologies, Empire, Veggie and Vegetarian Living. I also had Women's Health and Glamour until recently. And I've still finished them all before the next month's start arriving! I read fast....

Take A Break, Bella, Woman and Woman's Own. I know...how common!
