had very high hopes but about 70 pages in and quite overwhelmed by the amount of description

anyone else read it?

Yes I've read it and I really liked it. It's personal opinion though isn't it. I didn't get on with Hangover Square and gave up a chapter or so in.

Does it carry on in that detailed description mode? I like a bit more dialogue than what I've read so far.
I've got it for another week. I am in a funny mood reading wise, I can see what's good about the style but finding it heavy going.

It was a while ago that I read it but I did really enjoy it. I think the style stays the same. It doesn't lighten up.

It might be that you're not in the right mood for it. Maybe give up for now and try another time. I definitely have that with books. I have to be in the right frame of mind for certain books.

It's worth trying again with it though.

I also have "Hahgover Square" - I decided to nab both while they were on the shelf! But the first few pages seem a lot different.

I loved Hangover Square (I know you're not meant to say this on MN but what a cow Netta is) but struggled with Twenty Thousand Streets (not sure I finished it)

I'm afraid I got my books in a muddle, the other one i have is actually Slaves of Solitude but I will get Hangover Square!

Actually so have I ! The one I got stuck on is Slaves of Solitude !

I never meet anyone who's read Patrick Hamilton. Hangover Square is one of my favourite books of all time and I sob every time I read it. Slaves of Solitude is equally brilliant. I do think Twenty Thousand Streets takes a little more time to get into, and wouldn't be where I would start. I don't think anyone writes about menace and misery quite like Hamilton, it's quite an extraordinary style but very very good.
