Help me start to read again - social media taking over!

I spend all my spare time on mn and fb these days. I used to read all the time, but now "never have time" .. Confused

Anyone else been in a similar position or struggling right now with this?

I need to find a good book to get me reading again. I've resorted to reading trashy stuff at bedtime for ten mins because I can't concentrate on anything else (pretty stressful life at the moment, separation, moved house, bereavement).

I can't give up social media entirely, because a lot of the time it's the only way to keep in touch with my older children and good friends who live far away.

Any suggestions of books to start with? Something well written, but not difficult to read...

I'm the same.

Just bought the Rosie Project in the kindle sale for 99p as I've seen some people recommend it on here.

BabyGanoush ouch! I've just moved house, to a new area, need to register at the library, but to be honest I read mainly on my kindle anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions, off to the Amazon app now ..

I read The Rosie Project, it was quite good, not as good as I expected, having read about it on here.

I've got A God in Ruins as a free Audible download, but haven't had a chance to listen yet.

I love Sue Townsend, very funny, but I've read them all.

I enjoyed One Day and Starter for Ten by David Mitchell.

The last book I read was Inconceivable by Ben Elton, so I might try more of his.

The Neapolitan Novels (set of 4, the first is 'My Brilliant Friend' by Elena Ferrante are just fantastic. The only books to truly engage me right to the end in years.

I gave up on the Rosie project it was far too twee. Dh bought me a couple of crap chick lit things - I've tried one but it's awful. Fat women in crap relationships with horrible bosses find solidarity at a weight loss club.

Same here.

I've started with The Girl On The Train. I am loving it, and could read it in one day if I was allowed. It's also written like diary entries so it's ok for constant interruptions and requests for food/drink/ and other distractions. The Sue Perkins book is next, then To Kill A Mockingbird and the follow up.

I have really missed reading.

Talulaley · 04/01/2016 10:32

Fatrascals, sounds perfect, I'll check her out.

Goodbetter, I fancy sue Perkins book too, I love her. I'll have a look at Girl on the train, I remember reading something about it and thinking it looked good.

Talulaley · 04/01/2016 10:33

Sorry, name changed

Destinysdaughter · 04/01/2016 14:32

Am currently reading Girl on the Train and enjoying it. Could easily read it in one sitting!

Fraggled · 04/01/2016 14:35

Same here!! I just downloaded the hunger games trilogy for mere pennies in the kindle sale. I'm half way through the second book already and I only started reading 3 days ago!
I also bought The Miniaturist as that was on sale too and people keep saying good things about it on here.

I also deleted the FB app from my phone to avoid constant checking.

Sylviecat · 04/01/2016 19:10

I feel the same!

Completely agree with fatrascals re liane moriaty. Her books are well written and gripping.
Versions of us was brilliant too. But I read it on holiday where I didn't have any wifi and got totally absorbed. I guess that's the key!

Talulaley · 05/01/2016 01:40

Well I've downloaded some stuff for the kindle - Leanne Moriarty, Graham Nortons autobiography (99p), Jenny eclairs new book ..

Talulaley · 05/01/2016 01:40

And Girl on the train!

velourvoyageur · 05/01/2016 12:00

Children's books - Jennings by Anthony Buckeridge, I can never get enough!

Larsson, Dragon Tattoo series?

Roald Dahl's adult stories. Brilliant.

But honestly I would just go down to the charity shops, to the kids sections, and get a bagful. Easy to get into and cheap. Malorie Blackman, Dick King Smith etc. The Alice books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor are all available on Amz (they were, at least), it's a looong series and Alice is a lovely character to read about.

Also The Miseducation of Cameron Post is great. Definitely one of the best YA books I've read.

If you like Gilmore Girls, I quite liked Lauren Graham's novel about living in New York as a struggling actress.

I'm making myself read 20 pages of a book every evening by holding the guinea pig - can't disturb him when he does his eyes squeezed shut, sleeping croissant expression! It's a difficult book for me though atm and I have to read every single word to understand it, which I don't like, that's why I have this 20-page quota Hmm to keep focused.
When I go back after Xmas hols there will no longer be an obliging GP though :(

sorry to hear about the bereavement OP, no wonder you're distracted.

Me too, kindle for Christmas, loved The Husband's Secret, such an easy clever book. The tea Planter's Wife, not so much.
