More time reading, less time on the internet in 2016

My one and only NY resolution!

I've faded away with my reading this year, partly due to a lot going on at home, but also tbh because of faffing about on MN and other sites at times when my concentration hasn't been too good.

I'm worried that I'm losing my reading stamina, so next year I am really going to try to regain it.

Aiming for 100 books, with regular posting on the 50-book challenge thread to keep me focused.

I need to find some good big absorbing reads to get immersed in now Smile

Yes this is my resolution too, I get so annoyed with myself flicking around on my phone, refreshing pages and not enriching my life in any way.

I am more of a non fiction reader though so is that OK in the 50 book challenge?

There's a lot of non-fiction readers on the 50 Book Challenge, hairspray, including myself. Incidentally, autocorrect just tried to change your nn from hairspray to Shakespeare :o. So you are destined to be part of the thread!

Do all come and join us over on the 50 books threads - we are not at all highbrow over there.

Velour - Definitely get a Kindle. I dithered for ages and thought I wouldn't like it. I was wrong.

Hairspray - yes to non-fiction on the 50 threads. I'm finding myself reading more and more of it, because so many novels make me so cross! :)

So, I have posted on t'other thread with a resume of my woeful total for 2015.
I shall now try to finish book number 28 before the year ends Grin.

I'm in! I have started buying books in hardback instead of on the Kindle and I've now got quite a pile ready and waiting. Going to start with the Brief History of Seven Killings.

Lovely, thank you quog and remus, see you there (not sure my posts will be quite as good as Shakespeare though!)

This is definitely something I need to do. I am pregnant with dc3 and due to start maternity leave in February so hopefully will have more time to read in 2016.

Definitely in!

I managed 16 novels, 2 collections of short stories and three history books this year, which is better than the years when my children were small (think I just about managed to peruse the DM's celeb sidebar of shame once a week in those dark, dark days Grin), but piss poor compared to my old pre-DC reading rate.

I'm aiming for a novel a week, and one non-fiction book a month in 2016.

I shall be posting on the 50 Book Challenge to keep motivated! Grin

Has the 50 book challenge 2016 thread been started yet so we can sign in? Ive just started a book that I know I won't finish before Friday - so will get an easy 'first' in!

Can I join ? I am so keen to get back into reading and I have shelves of books that need attention ...

Fwiw folks, I read a paltry 16 books in 2013 because of faffing around online too much but last year I read 60 and this year I'm going to finish on 78 and it's because of joining the first 50 Books in 2014 thread.

Dino I'm not starting it until Friday morning

Can I join in too? I used to read 2/3 books a week but smartphone s and tablets steal my eyes these days!

I am very lo brow. Chic lit and the odd thriller but desperate for a new genre/author I can really get my teeth into.

I'm in! I've buggered my concentration levels with too much aimless surfing, so it'll be a bit of a struggle but I NEED to get my reading mojo back!

I think I could do 24/25 but I will give it my all. I am looking for some good recommendations. Which I know will happen here.

I'm in please! Was just saying to DH that we really must cut down on the Internet as a leisure time. I used to read loads, watch interesting documentaries, crochet... Instead it is soooo easy just to collapse in front of the iPad and waste hours away every night. He is the same. Once the kids are in bed we just sit with the to blaring not really concentrating and each pissing about on the Internet, I have the attention span of a goldfish :-(

My new year resolution is to read more (aiming for 2-3 books per month) and to watch a proper film each week. Wondering whether to put the wifi on a timer!

I find it useful to keep track of my reading on Goodreads as well, using their annual Reading Challenge which launches on New Year's Day. With that, you just enter the number of books you plan or hope to read in the year, which can be altered at a later date if you think you will read more or fewer books, and it keeps a tally for you. That way I can easily look back over my year's reading, write reviews, and add comments and copy over onto MN. It helps with encouraging you to keep going, plus you can add friends on there and see how everyone else is doing Xmas Smile

Yes, yes this is me. I was saying to DH only yesterday that I must put my iPad down and read. I still buy books as I used to and have plenty of wonderful reads just waiting for me to get my shit together!

Guinea - I like the idea of watching a proper film each week too. Don't suppose you fancy starting a thread, with recs? Grin

I like sitting down with a film but dp and I struggle to find ones we both fancy. I like quirky and a bit daft, or period dramas and he likes foreign language films and horror! Some that we have both loved include:
Pride (everybody should watch this - one of the best films I've seen in years!)
The Theory of Everything (Eddie Redmayne is absolutely sublime in it)
Moonrise Kingdom and Hotel Budapest
Juno

Sorry for the slight hijack, readers! Grin

Yy, in the same vein, to go along with this resolution I am also vowing to stop watching endless repeats of Friends on tv and watch some films and documentaries instead.

Remus, yes ok will start a post! Sympathise with you on the DH front - my DH and I have entirely different tastes when it comes to both films and music. I like period dramas, biographies, films based on true stories. DH enjoys sci-fi, action and romcoms. Music wise I love pop, 70s and classical. DH's playlist consists solely of jazz and indie stuff, neither of which I can stand!

I'll be in too :D didn't keep updated with it this year (50 book thread) and have had many distracted moments. Still read plenty though!

I'm interested in the film thread idea too :)

I love the 50 book challenge and I also log each book read in Goodreads, mainly so I can look back over the year and see what I've been reading.
I've read so many good books that were on the thread this year that I wouldn't have heard of otherwise.

I tried for 100 this year but I've managed 50. I'm going to be putting the iPad away in the evenings from now on!
