50 Book Challenge 2015 Part Six

southeastdweller · 23/12/2015 18:05

Thread six of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2015, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

First thread of the year here, second thread here, third thread here, fourth thread here and fifth thread here.

How did you get on this year?

Thank you, Quog!

Is Dark Places any good? Has anyone read it?

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:41

The Dark Forest (sequel to The Three-Body Problem) is 99p on the Kindle! Smile

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:43

World War Z and Annihilation are 99p each. Both are very good, I would totally recommend them to everyone here. (Well, Annihilation more to sci-fi readers Smile)

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:44

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides is now £1.49 on the Kindle. Not sure why Amazon classifies it as Sci-fi & Fantasy, though. Possibly because they think intersex people don't exist? Confused

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:46

Neuromancer by William Gibson is £1.49 on the Kindle. This is the book where the term "cyberspace" appears for the first time. It was a total game-changer back when it was published in early-1980s, changing the course of sci-fi overnight from space operas to the-day-after-tomorrow stories of humankind's technological future here on Earth.

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:49

The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton is £1.19 on the Kindle. This is the winner of 2013 Man Booker Prize, and it is brilliant historical fiction about a murder during New Zealand's gold rush.

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:50

A Foreign Country by Charles Cumming is £1.49 on the Kindle. Great modern spy fiction.

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 09:53

Somebody stop me Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2015 13:43

Merry Christmas everybody! Here's the Christmas books that dp and I received - hurray! :)

Quogwinkle · 25/12/2015 13:50

That's a good haul of books, Remus [hsmile]. I got The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson and the new illustrated hardback edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Very happy.

Quogwinkle · 25/12/2015 13:52

That should have been Xmas Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2015 13:53

I might treat myself to the illustrated HP. :)

MegBusset · 25/12/2015 14:15

Thanks for the heads -up on the kindle sale; I've loaded up with some good ones for the start of 2016 so no excuse for slacking! (If I start a book today and finish next Friday it counts in next year's total, right?)

ChillieJeanie · 25/12/2015 17:59
  1. Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

It seemed like a good idea to re-read this one at Christmas! I hope everyone has had a lovely day.

wiltingfast · 25/12/2015 18:53

Hah, just tried to post on the old thread!

Happy Christmas everyone Smile

Americanah is £1.99, just picked it up with Neuromancer Grin new year, here we come!

whitewineandchocolate · 25/12/2015 19:54

Happy Christmas to you all Xmas Smile

Have hardly read anything recently due to normal Christmas stuff plus my mum being admitted to hospital two and a half weeks ago, she is still there now and not doing terribly well, so sad.

  1. The Glass Painters Daughter - Rachel Hore - I have read one of hers before and this started off ok but tailed off and really became rather dull chick lit. Has put me off reading anymore of hers.

  2. Audio book - Black Diamonds - The Rise and Fall of an English Dynasty by Catherine Bailey. This is the story of the decline of the Fitzwilliam family at Wentworth in the 20th century and also the decline of the coal mining industry over the same period. I really enjoyed the story, probably enjoyed the Wentworth section slightly more than the coal mining.

So excluding audiobooks I've probably read the 50 target, about the same as last year. Must try for higher quality next year.

So far in the kindle sale I've bought The King's Curse by Phillipa Gregory but thought the choice was good this year so may go back for more. I've got so many books to read though ......

southeastdweller · 25/12/2015 20:44

Happy Christmas everyone Xmas Smile

Sorry to hear about your mum whitewine.

meg Some people carry over books from one year to the next and count them Smile

I'm currently half way through Rebecca and not enjoying it quite as much as I thought I would be.

Sorry to hear about your mum Whitewine

Merry Christmas everyone.

Good haul of books there Remus. I loved the Galbraith and you've reminded me that I want to read the Viv Albertine book.

Just finished book no 99 - Rebecca. Sorry you're not enjoying it South.

Off to look at the 12 days sale now.

CoteDAzur · 25/12/2015 21:33

I'm sorry to hear about your mum, whitewine. Best wishes for her speedy recovery Flowers

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2015 21:37

Sorry to hear about your mum, Whitewine.

Best I bought the Galbraith for dp and his reaction was, 'I guess you'll be wanting to read this then?'!

I'm stupidly pleased to have a shiny new copy of the Cherry G and really looking forward to reading them all (although have read the Kerr before - shhh - don't tell dp!).

southeastdweller · 25/12/2015 21:53

Remus What's the name of the book under the Philip Kerr one?

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2015 21:56

The two skinny ones are Shire history books. They are lovely little books, on some really niche topics (holiday camps, for example!). Dp chose, 'The Victorian Detective' and, 'The Victorian Workshouse' which are both very much up my street!

whitewineandchocolate · 25/12/2015 22:18

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. I took her in a pile of books earlier including Charlotte Bronte:A Life by Claire Harman which she was really pleased with.

BestIsWest · 25/12/2015 22:19

Remus and Cote I bought Operation Mincemeat for my Dad after reading about it here so I'll be borrowing it in the New Year. Like the sound of the little history books.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/12/2015 22:30

Hope he enjoys it. I forgot to list it on the, 'Best Reads of 2015' thread, but it was definitely high up on the list.
