I'm only a few pages in but really enjoying it (after an aborted attempt a couple of years back)

yes, I did. I took a while to get into it, I found it very detatched at first. I really enjoyed it though.

exactly. I found it odd a woman writing as a male narrator but can kind of see where it's coming from now. will persist

oh yes, I loved it.
You know she is married to Paul Auster? (I can't bear his stuff)

bundle · 14/12/2006 15:30

yes bp, they're a bit of an alpha family and have the v attractive grown-up daughter to prove it.

(And then there's PA's son from first marriage, who may have inspired certain parts of WIL)

I read it when I was pg this time last year. I actually started it a year before but couldn't get into it but read it in a week as I was retiring early due to early pg exhaustion!

I found it riveting in a spooky, sad and frustrating way. The 'Mark' character - mamma mia - he gave me the willies.

I love New York and loved the fact ti was set there.

God I've not read a good book in ages...

hoxtonchick · 14/12/2006 18:17

really liked it. isn't it fairly autobiographical? google her after you've read it bundle, i remember finding an interesting article.

MrsMuddle · 14/12/2006 18:35

I read this about a year ago, and, having no memory cells left, I can't remember anything about it, apart from the the fact that I loved it!

niceglasses · 14/12/2006 18:43

Yeah read it a while back and bought another of hers on the back of it but haven't read yet. Liked the portrait of their marriages and relationships- know what you mean by 'detached'. Quite liked Auster's New York Trilogy and his American Short story stuff, though thats not really him I suppose.

tamum · 14/12/2006 18:56

I really liked it. Agree about the detachment but it was so vivid and involving. I agree with hoxty about googling, I found a very interesting interview with her too.

This is brilliant - I cant remember why but I know I have bought copies for and recommended to other people.

Its very new yorky if I remember.
