Over the next few weeks we'll be launching our recommendations for books this Christmas, taking in adult fiction, non-fiction, kids' books for all ages and cookery books and other gift/coffee table type books. We've kicked off this week with our list for the best fiction for Christmas 2015.

We thought it would be useful to run a thread so you can share your Christmas books gift ideas. We look forward to hearing your thoughts...

I have bought:

SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome for my DM

The World According to G by Geraint Thomas and Red Dragons: The Story of Welsh Football by Phil Stead for DS1 (13).

The Hunger Games series for DS2 (11)

Little Stars and Katy by Jaqueline Wilson for DD (9)

I am hoping for the new Nigella cookbook and the Sue Perkins autobiography

We've recently launched our non-fiction recommendations and our best books for 9-12s and teens. Happy browsing!

I really want to get DS some Shaun Tan books but they are never on offer!

Kicking myself as I saw a really nice travel/photography book in TK Maxx, was too heavy to carry around to work meeting, thought I'd remember it's name and have forgotten. Was lonely planet or rough guide and it was something like 'one day in a life' or 'the world in a day'.

I have bought both my little ones The Little Stork & My Given Name which is a personalised book with positive messages for them. I loved the story and the quality and think this is a fantastic gift for little ones under 5ys. For my oldest I also bought that new best seller to help them sleep - The Rabbit who wants to fall asleep - not impressed but havent tried it out yet.. :)

I've got ds The Art of Video Games - a lovely illustrated book on,well, the art of video games over the years that comes with a record and download for some of the music! He's a games/console 'collector' I guess.

Tempted to either get him the illustrated Harry Potter or a leather bound copy of Peter Pan to read with him. Have got him the new Harry Potter colouring book which is lovely.

I might get a couple of Michel Fabers that I don't have, along with The Five People You Meet in Heaven and tempted with Homers Odyssey, but haven't decided yet. Would love an Edgar Allen Poe and a few others too but I buy my own presents!

jenijena have you read any of Sadie Jones's books? They come with appalling airport romfic covers of swooning women, but inside they are not at all like that - excellent writing, very compelling, and very varied subject matter. If you haven't read any I'd say start with 'The Outcast'.

I have got;
DH - Laurie Lee 'Village Christmas'
Timur Vermes 'Look Who's Back'
Marlon James 'Brief History of 7 Killings' the Booker winner

DD 14 and DS 12(they can pick and choose who reads what);
Maze Runner set, Chaos Walking set, orwell 1984, Grk set, some Daphne du Maurier, The Restaurant at the end of the Universe, a batch of modern teen fic including some John Green and Rainbow Rowell, 'Room' by Emma Donoghue, some Calvin and Hobbes books, 'How to Win Games and Beat People', and I have got 'The Marvels' (Brian Selznick) ready for DS's birthday.

Me: these fell into my basket by accident, I will give them to the DC to give me:
'Sister Noon' Karen Joy Fowler
'The Natural Navigator' Tristram Gooley.

As usual I got very carried away at The Book People. I always include some new and some good condition used books, we all have no problem with second hand books, they come in and go out of the house all the time.

SpecialMama · 05/12/2015 22:11

"The Unquiet Dead" for him.

"All That Followed" don't know yet for who but I just had to get it.

"How To Cure And Prevent The Alzheimer?" Bought this for the elderly (they don't have it yet but who knows).

And something small for myself the "Career of Evil"

ThomasRichard · 07/12/2015 11:31

The Poisonwood Bible for me.

The Most Marvellous Thing and 60 Most Deadly for 5yo DS.

Usborne's First 1000 Words and I Am Amelia Earhart for 3yo DD.

UrsulaMumsnet · 07/12/2015 11:51

Best Cookbooks for Christmas has now launched; a tantalisingly tasty list of the top ten cookbooks from the best chefs around, including Nigel, Hugh, Anna, and, of course, the one and only Nigella...!

everydayinMK · 11/12/2015 21:16

I'm buying the new Tales of a Minecraft Zombie story for the kids. 😕 (Because that's what we've put on our list, mummy!)

My mum is giving me a copy of the Delia How To Cheat at Cooking book because she says I need to spend less time in the kitchen 😄 (is it even still in print?!)

And I've bought for her and my best friend a fab new thriller by an ex-police detective that I've just read: The Theseus Paradox. Check out the reviews on Amazon. It was listed as one to watch for 2016. I honestly couldn't put it down! It's here:

cressetmama · 14/12/2015 16:46

I've downloaded the sample of The Theseus Paradox to try; it sounds right up my street, so will report back if I have to buy the whole thing.

Quogwinkle · 14/12/2015 17:50

I settled on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (illustrated edition) - it is just beautiful. Looking forward to sharing that one with DS.

And The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson.

everydayinMK · 15/12/2015 00:05

@cressetmama - Ooh good stuff. I think you'll like it. The author is a bit of a hunk too! I saw him on ITV News talking about the truth behind 'The Theseus Paradox' and Googled him:

www.DavidVidecette.com/about-david

He's a proper East-End James Bond rough diamond sort.

Apparently he actually really did all the stuff in the book himself! Loads of manly chasing of baddies. (And there's the odd bit of saucy stuff for us mums...😮😊)

Let me know how you get on with it. I loved it.

For DH: A Strangeness in my Mind by Orhan Pamuk. He's a big fan of his work. Also the I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue book.

For DS1: A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig, Star Wars annual, Time Riders by Alex Scarrow and the Stampy's Lovely Book.

For DD1: The latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, The Diamond of Drury Lane by Julia Golding and a couple of Jacqueline Wilson audiobooks.

DS1: I can't remember

DD2: Laika

I'm not hoping for any books in particular for myself this year. There's nothing I'm desperate to get my hands on.

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/12/2015 10:03

Dm - something by Cathy Kelly

DF - the first Shardlake

DH - Flashman's Lady

Ds 4 - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mog in the Dark, Iggy Peck Architect and Marvel Spiderman Story Collection. Was considering the new illustrated Harry Potter but think he is a bit young yet for it I think.

Dd 2 - Bing by Ted Dewan, Maisy books

I would like the new Kate Atkinson A God in Ruins, I've mentioned it enough I think but not sure if I'll get it. Still in hardback too, so as pp said don't mind waiting for the paperback. I've also bought Jostein Gaarder The Christmas Mystery for the build up to get me in the spirit.

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/12/2015 10:13

Oh and

DNeice I've got Truckers by Terry Pratchett and a The Person Controller by David Baddiel

FoxInABox · 19/12/2015 09:21

I would really like Dorothy koomson that girl from nowhere, and the downton abbey book.
I've bought my DD5 the stick man, to coincide with it being on the TV as I'm sure she will love it. DS3 has got lots of Thomas and friends books. DD8 has got some of the princess mirror belle older books, and maths quest set.
