My dd is into witches and vampires. She has a couple of Little vampire books but can anyone suggest a book about witches for her for Christmas. She is 7 going on 13 so an early reader style thing wouldn't be any good to her.
Any one read Wizardology ? Expensiver than other books I've looked at but maybe nice?

have you looked at the debbie gliori (sp?) ones pure dead magic etc. haven't read them but they look nice (they've got velvety covers in hardback)

admylin · 06/12/2006 21:35

Thanks for that tip, sound good. I am in Germany so I can only browse Amazon so I didn't see those ones, will have a look.

or the darren shan vampire series (though aimed at teens, so you might like to check the content is suitable) or vampirates series by justin somper. what about worst witch (jill murphy) or is that too young for her?

admylin · 06/12/2006 21:40

Great, ds would love those Justin Somper ones too. We are going to have one big pile of books to transport back to Germany this year. My list is so long!

thechristmassyone · 06/12/2006 21:44

are you forces in germany? just wondered cause amazon will deliver to bfpo for same as uk post (save you carrying them?)

orangecake · 06/12/2006 21:45

The Wickedest Witch in the World - paperback.

I loved this as a child and my daughetrs loved it too.

winnie · 06/12/2006 21:47

witch words... its a faber poetry book and dd loved it from 3 yrs up into her teens. Lovely pen and ink illustrations too. Can't remember the author but will go and have a look on dd's book shelf.

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 06/12/2006 21:49

What about the series The Worst Witch. I think it follows a young witch through witch school and all the different things that go on - and obviously harry potter if you don't think this will be too hard for her.

admylin · 06/12/2006 21:52

No we aren't forces but we fly to UK on the 23rd for the school holidays and I have to send pressie lists to all the family who would usually have bought fairy and princess style books only my dd is very anti-fairy and girly stuff! That is why I can only look on Amazon to get ideas really and sometimes you can't tell what a book will be like etc.
Anyway thanks for the suggestions. Up to now has any one seen Wizardology? Is it worth it? We love books so they will be treasured presents.

Gobbolino the witches cat. Can't think who it's by, sorry, but I loved it at about that age.

thechristmassyone · 06/12/2006 21:57

ahh I see about the carrying! don't know the wizardology one, I'll see if my library (where i work, i don't own it-though i'd like to)has it and do you a mini review if you like? always happy to help on book related things! who's the author?

dolally · 06/12/2006 23:23

Roald Dahl's The Witches... if she's a good reader... my 10 year old dd just adores it!

shonaspurtle · 06/12/2006 23:32

Diana Wynne Jones Chrestomanci books are all fab.

I also loved Gobbolino the Witches Cat (Ursula Moray Williams I think?).

Thanks for all the ideas, now everyone at home has a good list and choice of what to get the kids and all we need to do is take a spare suitcase with us!

No, up to now the libraries are a big dissapointment. I was expecting American Institutes and British Council libraries but there doesn't seem to be much on offer.
In the local library I've read through all the English books available so I am going to have to bring a load back this time. For children there isn't even half a shelf to borrow. I hate it when I haven't got anything to read. Dh brought me 2 books back from UK last time he went and I finished them in a few days, I was so sad when I got to the last page!
In the south of Germany we had more on offer in the town library for adults and children in English so much better than the capital city Berlin.

Another yes for Wizardology here, we have the entire set and they are mesmerising!

hiya,
sorry my library doesn't have it, but it sounds from the other posts that it's very good, so i'd go for it. (sounds like you don't need encouragment to buy books though, just like me!)

admylin · 10/12/2006 12:36

Thanks for all the info, can't wait to get my hands on the pressies this year, I've totally ran out of stuff to read! I've been searching for some titles in english for ages and am so desperate I even looked for them in our local german library to read them in German but they didn't have them either.

By the way thechristmassyone, what qualifications do you need to work in a library in UK? They don't have a degree subject at university for librarians here - dh says it exists though?
