What about Early One Morning by Virigina Baily?

Pancakeflipper · 01/09/2015 17:12

An easy read but good for debate if you are a group of parents and non-parents is Big little Lies by Liane Moriaty. But they might think you are a light weight!

Whatever you choose can you also suggest that people get their own copies from now on? Poor library funds and other borrowers. I've been in book clubs for 15 years and part of the interest of it is comparing editions, oohing at Kindles/ ipads when they came out etc.
Also do you always do 'hypey' new books? Over the years we've found a better mixture is classics/ unsung favourites/ occassional biography. There's a certain book club genre (family saga/ personal odyssey against the background of war/ diaspora) which doesn't, in fact, facilitate great discussion.

Our book club has been going for 10 years, we have read a huge mix of books, all genres, many classics and also have poetry evenings. We used to all buy our books but some of us simply cant afford to every 6 weeks or so. I went to the library this morning and gave three new choices and all were heavily reserved in Kent. None of us have kindles as we all like a real book in our hands!

I realise it's too late now but in situations like this our book club used to do a mixture of books.

We'd either get a selection of books by the same author or a selection on a similar theme.

Would that be an option for the future if the problem comes up again?

DuchessofMalfi · 04/09/2015 05:28

That's a good idea Hygge. You could do that, Triplets. Truman Capote and Harper Lee were childhood friends, there's a link - she based the character of Dill in To Kill A Mockingbird on him. So you could grab all the copie of Go Set A Watchman and In Cold Blood, and distribute them, read, and swap over for next time?

Also, Harper Lee did considerable research, interviews, and leg work for In Cold Blood. For which Capote gave her no credit in his acknowledgements for the book.

Also Capote based his character Idabel Thomkins in Other Voices, Other Rooms on Harper Lee.

I've just read Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller from our library, worth a try? It's chilling and mildly thought-provoking, I thought it was well written.

DuchessofMalfi · 04/09/2015 09:34

She did - in the film Capote, Harper Lee works just as hard as he did gathering information, interviewing people etc. That could be another point of discussion - collaboration on work. She helped him pull together In Cold Blood, did he help her at all with TKAM or GSAW? I loved the film Capote, was gripping - well worth a view if you get a chance.
