Looking for ideas for Christmas presents. dh has just read the series by Alexander McCall Smith about the lady detective. First one called 'The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. He loved them. That's the kind of book he likes if that helps. He doesn't get much time to read so it has to be something fairly manageable over the Christmas break. Thanks a lot.

has he read the curious adventure of the dog in the night time? mark haddon? or failing that, new book, same author, looked good when I was skimming it in waterstones...

... dog in the night time is good and not too long.
Or Life of Pi? Very different but also not that long really.
Any Ian McEwan. Saturday was quite light I thought, but well written.

The Sue Grafton novels, A is for Alibi, B id for Burglar etc are good. Nice & manageable, punchy, quirky

NotQuiteCockney · 27/11/2006 14:03

Elmore Leonard does some fairly manageable mystery books. More gross than the McCall Smith, but very well-written, and quite light.

Does it have to be a novel just bought my husband this as it has great reviews

Tom Robbins - Jitterbug perfume, even cowgirls get the blues, half asleep in frog pyjamas - or any really
DP likes them
Or John O'Farrell books are easy reading but funny
Peter Ackroyd - First Light or Hawksmoor
I'd suggest Alice Hoffman as they are my favourites - easy read, interesting but they may be a bit girly?

HowTheFillyjonkStoleChristmas · 27/11/2006 14:09

or iain banks?

Eulalia · 27/11/2006 14:09

Thanks for the suggestions - keep them coming.

We've both read Dog in the Nightime... our eldest son has autism so it strikes a chord obviously.

I can't stand Jeremy Clarkson on tv but his books are brilliant - insightful & often very funny. I like them just as much as dh does. Especially 'You know you got soul'.

stleger · 27/11/2006 15:25

Jeremy Clarkson lives in our toilet - ds pretends not to read it! The Scottish based Alexander McCall Smiths? And he likes Ian Rankin if that helps.

JoolsToo · 27/11/2006 15:30

Dead Simple by Peter James
fast paced thriller, a real page turner - both me and dh loved it.

Bink · 27/11/2006 15:47

It has to be Carl Hiaasen: here you are .

I will eat my half-moon specs (says Miss Grainger) if that is not perfect.

MarsLady · 27/11/2006 15:55

You have to get him the Rebus books. Ian Rankin's fab! I think you can get the first 5 books for pence from the bookpeople online.

I love Rebus!
