DD aged 9 has just romped through the novel- Clarice Bean spells trouble. I have also enjoyed it. It's not tricky for a child to read but I think to get the full benefit and appreciate the wit probably 8+.

Loads of posters will now come on and say their 2 year old read it last week and understood every word!

Would agree on 8+

FrannyandZooey · 25/11/2006 19:32

I am reliably informed that there are 2 sorts - picture book ones such as My Uncle is a Hunkle, which would be ok for 3 year olds or similar, and older chapter type ones for 7+ or so

I have just ordered the set from The Red House / Book People including the former, so will report back when it arrives

ska · 25/11/2006 19:32

am about to buy'utterly me' for my 7 year old who reads e nesbit and similar stuff all by herself so think it'll be about 8+

We've been reading Utterly Clarence Bean to our DD (5.7) for the past few weeks. She is enjoying listening to it before bed. But a few years before she could read it herself.

NomDePlume · 25/11/2006 20:45

Thanks for the responses

I saw one in Tesco yesterday and had a brief flick through it. We love the Charlie and Lola books so I just thought I'd ask. It would be something I read to DD as she can't read yet (she is 4y3m).

I was looking at these yesterday and was going to ask the same question [freaky]!

Also I wanted to ask - are they girlie or would boys enjoy them? I have a vague memory of Cod mentioning them a while ago and I know she only has boys ... I am thinking of getting one for DS but if he thought it was 'girlie' it will be pooh poohed

Oh, and is there an 'order' or can you start with any one ... saw Utterly Me in the bookshop but didn't know if that is the first of a series or if it even matters

TheHighwayCod · 26/11/2006 11:37

TheHighwayCod · 26/11/2006 11:38

DONT ruin it by reading too early imo

robinpud · 26/11/2006 14:34

I read it last week aged 39 and a quarter.. am very worried I have read it too soon -Cod what do you think?

ska · 26/11/2006 18:10

they are in the new book people catalogue and age 5+ which I think is too young.

Pollyanna · 26/11/2006 18:28

my ds in year 3 loves them. I am waiting until my dd can read them to herself.

BettySpaghetti · 26/11/2006 18:40

ska -I saw those (set of 3 in the Book People catalogue) when looking for books for DD (just 7) -I presumed they were chapter books but then read the blurb which said age 5+ and also said "picture books". Shame as she would love them but think they'd be too young.

ghosty · 26/11/2006 19:00

Cod, so, your DS is 8/9 yes? DS will be 7 this week - an excellent reader but perhaps lacks the stamina for a novel ...
He is massively into Captain Underpants (personally, I am not a huge fan) and reads them all the time.

NomDePlume · 26/11/2006 19:02

Well I am reading the orginal Alice in Wonderland to my 4 year old prodigy

[sniff]

Oooooh, hark at NDP

DS has, of course, read War and Peace but I don't like to broadcast it as you know people get funny about 'boasters' on MN

BettySpaghetti · 26/11/2006 19:21

You mean your children are only reading novels? Mine are writing them don't you know

ska · 27/11/2006 12:11

thanks bettyspaghetti (love your name, my kids say 'bagspetty' for spaghetti!). Well I find that my dd is an avid reader of allsorts and some picture books are still ok for her. BTW are you all taking the piss out of me or someone else? Would just like to know how embarrassed to feel.

doobydoo · 27/11/2006 12:17

Ghosty..my ds loves them and he is 7.He like some of the Tracy Beaker ones too.

doobydoo · 27/11/2006 12:19

He likes Captain Underpants too.and he still loves Charley and Lola.

BettySpaghetti · 27/11/2006 13:57

ska -no, don't worry, nothing you said! Just some jokey one-up-manship (NDP started it! )

ska · 27/11/2006 15:28

Phew! captain underpants is (are?) absolutely fab! thoroughly recommend them.
