Loving this series. Anyone else?

The new one arrived on my kindle last night, but it will have to wait because the new Henry Bins arrived at the same time and I really, really want to read that.

Yesterday was like a tsunami of fab things, two books that I have been looking forward to were published, the DC went back to school, my lovely SIL arrived from Malaysia and she and I have booked ourselves onto a 3-day cookery course in Ballymaloe. I was like a kid at Christmas. Grin

Not enough Markham or Peterson either. I enjoyed each individual episode, but I felt it was a bit lacking in overall plot, compared to the previous books. I saw that last twist coming, too.

But I was Grin at the car park incident. Must go and read that part again.

I haven't worked the twist out yet, and I am on the very cusp of the twist. That's probably because I'm not the brightest spark and I have virtually no idea about English history (didn't go to school in the UK). Sometimes ignorance is good. Grin I'm expecting to be surprised.

Agreed Harriet. Also, the more I think about it, the more I think she's painted herself into a bit of a corner with the final final twist. *

With Dr Bairstow' s remarks towards the end, I felt there was a passing of the torch going on, and that perhaps she's setting up St. Mary's: The Next Generation, with the original cast in the background. Max isn't as young or as fit as she was and couldn't keep up the pace forever.

I presume we'll find out the story of H., the (not) Greek bloke, in future.

Loved this series since they first came out. Finished the latest one last night. Just can't get into 'Isabella Barclay' though.

I want to post at length Grin so HURRY! Sugar and finish off - I can't say what I want without dropping a massive spoiler Grin

Sorry, I finished it about half an hour after posting, but didn't come back and tell you. It would probably be better to start a new thread with the word 'SPOILERS' in the title though. There are a few people on this thread who have been inspired to start from the beginning and they definitely wouldn't want a book 6 spoiler. Grin

I'm quite caught up in Ian Guthrie and Elspeth Grey's story, although there isn't much about them in this book. There is a short story about how she comes back that I read before this book. Hopefully there will be more about them in the next book.

TheSecondOfHerName · 13/09/2015 21:19

I loved it.

I was a bit confused about the references to America's closed borders and the Canadian corridor at the beginning. I thought perhaps we were in an alternate time-line and was waiting for this to be explained/clarified.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/09/2015 21:28

Max moved from our universe to an alternate universe a few books ago. In her original universe Leon had tragically died, and in the universe that Mrs Partridge has moved her to the Max that belonged there had died. There are some historical differences. They didn't go into the theory of multi-verses much, but I think it helped that Mrs Partridge is the daughter of a god and so was able to move between analogous universes.

TheSecondOfHerName · 13/09/2015 21:37

Thank you, I do vaguely remember that, but hadn't twigged that it would carry on to subsequent books.

Phantomquartz · 13/09/2015 22:23

If I've enjoyed the Chronicles of St Mary's books, what other authors should I try next? I generally don't think I like most "genres" but I've thoroughly enjoyed this and the Rivers of London series. I wouldn't normally even consider this type of book so I'm trying to be a bit more open minded....

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 14/09/2015 01:35

There's the "Laundry Files" - they are sort of along the lines of St Mary's/Rivers type things, without being too samey iyswim.
They're by Charles Stross, and "The Atrocity Archives" is the first one. They're usually dead cheap on Kindle - there are some short stories he's written as "bonus" extras too, so you could maybe try one of those to see if you like the style etc first.

Phantomquartz · 16/09/2015 16:17

Thanks I'll look them up...
