We have just done The Kite Runner which I think is going to be a hard act to follow, we discussed it for over two hours last night.........between slurps! My turn, what do you suggest. Is The Island good?

We're about to read Ali and Nino by Kurban Said. Set in about the 1920s in Azerbaijan. A muslim and a christian who fell in love as children. It's supposed to be amazing!

PandaG · 24/11/2006 14:53

We discussed The Historian last night, some people on here do not rate it, but our book group pretty much loved it, and we have varied taste, but we chatted for 2 hours really easily.

Bel Canto - completely different to the Kite Runner but absolutely amazing - or Middlesex - lots to talk about

MarsLady · 25/11/2006 09:46

I loved Bel Canto. Lent it to my sister who didn't want to give it back!

The Island is very good. Haven't done it for our book club but is making the rounds anyway and so far big thumbs up. I couldn't put it down which was quite difficult with an 8 month baby!!

Twohootsunderthemistletoe · 25/11/2006 10:49

Quite liked the Island too but felt it lacked 'depth' tbh. Very thought provoking though

What's the Historian about - sounds 'good'?

triplets · 26/11/2006 13:51

I`ve got a copy of The Island so could choose that and save some money!

The Secret History went down well with my old group (but you've prob done it).

binker · 26/11/2006 15:36

we did kite runner as our first book...have subsequently done the Lance Armstrong book,'It's not about the bike', Persuasion,The Alchemist (shite), Birdsong,Starter for Ten - good for a light Christmas laugh...just finishing Dabriel Garcia Marquez - Love and Other Demons...

spykid · 26/11/2006 16:59

THe historian....yawn

PandaG · 26/11/2006 22:36

The Historian - tracking down the roots of Dracula, from 3 different timeframes and viewpoints, but obviously spykid didn't like it! Is a long book - 700 pages, and is pretty dense, but I loved the detail.

themoon66 · 26/11/2006 23:05

triplet.... do you have to pay for books in your boook club? We get 15 copies delivered from the library.

spykid · 26/11/2006 23:07

I NEVER give up on a book. Historian was the first book to make me give up I'm afriad...sorry!

binker · 27/11/2006 17:09

Anyone done The Crow Road yet ? was considering it when it's my turn to choose

triplets · 29/11/2006 22:30

Hi the MOON66, yes we usually buy our books, though I get mine from Amazon. The others in the group are all single, working ladies who like to buy from our small local shop, fair enough, but I can`t afford it. Finally made my choice yesterdayas its my turn to choose
The Last Family In England by Matt Haig
a story as seen thru the eyes of a dog!

triplets.... go and ask at your library... they are keen to get book clubs started and will let you have up to 15 copies of the same book each month. But, someone has to be responsible for collecting and distributing them. We are lucky coz we have a part time librarian in our club, who runs back and forth with the boxes of books.

Been to the book club tonight, and we have Future Homemakers of America to read for the next months.

themoon66 · 29/11/2006 23:05

Oh... should have said. Once a year the library give you a huge list of everything they have available in multiples of 15. You then vote for 12 books off the list to have for the next 12 months. They let you have them as they become available... they have to circulate amongst a few clubs obviously.

triplets · 29/11/2006 23:41

Great info, thank you, will check at our local library, thanks
