I'm at a loss - can't find anything to inspire me and feel all restless and wrong as I don't have anything on the go

Hate: short story collections (even Atwood's); Gone Girl; Patricia Cornwell style crime; mysteries

Can anyone help?

Apols- missed out Donna Tartt's name! I don't think Sarah Waters wrote The Secret History

Perhaps try Wally Lamb/ Meg Wolitzer/ Jeffrey Eugenides or Jonathan Frantzen?

All quite literary dramas from US authors so seem to fit well with Tartt/ Shriver/Oates.

I like similar books to you, I think, and I've just finished The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue and I really enjoyed that.

Have you read Burial Rites by Hannah Kent? You might like it.

Kate Atkinson. You seem to have the same tastes as me, and I am currently reading her latest.

Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde.

They are my top faves and I am reading Endgame by James Frey at the moment, he wrote my all time fave book A Million Little Pieces.

I don't know where I would start if I were you, they are all such amazing treats!

I like many of your favourites too. Have you read Barbara Kingsolver? I thought The Poisonwood Bible was amazing.

YY to Barbara Kingsolver. Also Rose Tremain - Music and Silence and Restoration are particularly good.

Sue Gee - Earth and Heaven - not widely known but excellent.

And you must try Ann Patchett especially Brl Canto and State of Wonder. She's great.

I think you might like Carol Shields and Ann Tyler as you have similar tastes to me. I am currently enjoying Judy Blume's new adult book.

Another one here with similar tastes. I'm currently enjoying Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel (with the added bonus that it was less then £2 this week on kindle.)

How about Life After Life by Kate Atkinson?

I came on here to vote Kate Atkinson too. I really enjoyed all the books you've mentioned you like and she is definitely my favourite author!

Another vote for Kate Atkinson. I had mixed feelings about Life After Life, but the follow-up, A God in Ruins, was better.

I'm not the religious type at all but recently I've read the most amazing book on Amazon called ancient translations from genesis to Deuteronomy being 100 pounds I was put off but it's the best 100 I've EVER SPENT over totally re evaluated my life and parenting. I cannot recommend enough
