I'm at a loss - can't find anything to inspire me and feel all restless and wrong as I don't have anything on the go Sad

Love: Margaret Atwood; Sarah Waters (The Secret History - hated The Little Friend); Maggie O'Farrell; Helen Dunmore; Lesley Glaister; Joyce Carol Oates; Hilary Mantel; Lionel Shriver; Michel Faber

Hate: short story collections (even Atwood's); Gone Girl; Patricia Cornwell style crime; mysteries

Can anyone help?

TIA Flowers

Perhaps try Wally Lamb/ Meg Wolitzer/ Jeffrey Eugenides or Jonathan Frantzen?

All quite literary dramas from US authors so seem to fit well with Tartt/ Shriver/Oates.

I like similar books to you, I think, and I've just finished The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue and I really enjoyed that.

Have you read Burial Rites by Hannah Kent? You might like it.

eddiemairswife · 15/07/2015 22:19

Kate Atkinson. You seem to have the same tastes as me, and I am currently reading her latest.

foolonthehill · 15/07/2015 22:22

How about
"A Man Called Ove" fredrick Backman
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton(, a bit woo but detailed characters and history interesting)
The memory Book byRowan Coleman (bitter sweet journey through early dementia)
The children Act Ian McEwan (thought provoking, short...be interested to know what you think at the end)
Elizabeth is Missing ( a mystery wrapped in an older lady's fading memory...)
And the mountains Echoed Khaled Hsseini

foolonthehill · 15/07/2015 22:22

Hosseini

foolonthehill · 15/07/2015 22:25

US by David nichols....

OMG! Exciting, I like those authors too.

Get;
Anything by Patrick Ness, Chaso Walking trilogy was amazing
Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel (or Manden I can't remember)
Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde.

They are my top faves and I am reading Endgame by James Frey at the moment, he wrote my all time fave book A Million Little Pieces.

I don't know where I would start if I were you, they are all such amazing treats!

Thank you all so much - my Kindle will be on fire! Will report back re The Children Act - I love Ian McEwan and have a feeling I have a copy of that somewhere that I've forgotten about and haven't yet read.

I have similar likes to you. Have you tried Ann Tyler or Alice Hoffman?

I like many of your favourites too. Have you read Barbara Kingsolver? I thought The Poisonwood Bible was amazing.

highlandcoo · 16/07/2015 09:02

YY to Barbara Kingsolver. Also Rose Tremain - Music and Silence and Restoration are particularly good.

Sue Gee - Earth and Heaven - not widely known but excellent.

And you must try Ann Patchett especially Brl Canto and State of Wonder. She's great.

Watching this thread with interest as I very much like these authors too.

highlandcoo · 16/07/2015 09:03
  • sorry - Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. Trying to dry my hair at the same time!
574ejones · 16/07/2015 19:38

I think you might like Carol Shields and Ann Tyler as you have similar tastes to me. I am currently enjoying Judy Blume's new adult book.

atticusclaw · 16/07/2015 19:42

Another one here with similar tastes. I'm currently enjoying Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel (with the added bonus that it was less then £2 this week on kindle.)

TheWordFactory · 16/07/2015 19:45

How about Life After Life by Kate Atkinson?

EssaysOfElia · 16/07/2015 19:45

I came on here to vote Kate Atkinson too. I really enjoyed all the books you've mentioned you like and she is definitely my favourite author!

southeastdweller · 16/07/2015 20:16

Another vote for Kate Atkinson. I had mixed feelings about Life After Life, but the follow-up, A God in Ruins, was better.

Emily2608 · 16/07/2015 20:24

I'm not the religious type at all but recently I've read the most amazing book on Amazon called ancient translations from genesis to Deuteronomy being 100 pounds I was put off but it's the best 100 I've EVER SPENT over totally re evaluated my life and parenting. I cannot recommend enough

suzannecanthecan · 16/07/2015 20:57

hundred quid on a book EmilyShock
thats more like a years reading budget
my limit for fiction is round about £15 and then only if I think I can re sell it on amazon.

Thenbella I've read some of yours and I'm reading the bone clocks right now.
MN book sections are one of my go to places if I'm looking for fiction, loads of fab book chat and reviews/recommendations on here :)

highlandcoo · 16/07/2015 21:57

Oh .. and can't believe I forgot The Observations by Jane Harris, which I recommend to everyone!

CheckpointCharlie · 16/07/2015 22:28

Cool! And atticus are you enjoying it? Grin

I am going to plug some of these into my Amazon wish list.
