Hello

I am feeling a bit down and could do with a literary pick-me-up.
I can read anything in terms of genre and black humour also fine.
I have read lots of David Sedaris.
I tried both Tina Fey and Amy Poeler's autobiogs but did not like the snippets enough to buy them, was that an error?
Read 'Dad is fat' but not that impressed, his stand up is better.
Also read Josh Ferris.
Chick lit, enjoyed My life on a plate and Mad about the boyBlush but less impressed with Jojo whatserface or Marian Keye's latest.
Found bits of After Birth darkly funny although not everyone would agree.

So, what was the last book you read where you belly laughed?
FlowersCake thanks in advance xx

"Tabloid" by Sharon Marshall is hilarious. She's the woman who turns up on daytime TV giving the news from the 'SOAPS'. She used to be a journalist and "Tabloid" is her tell all book.

I also find anything but Augusten Burrows pretty funny.

I meant anything BY Augusten Burroughs.

Another vote for Andy Miller's Year of Reading Dangerously. Very funny and thoughtful. I felt a new love for being a reader after.

Sorry OP I know you said you're not a big Bill Bryson fan but for those that are I really enjoyed his "a Walk in the Woods" the story of him and his friend walking the Appulacian Trail at 45. I laughed out loud loads lying by the pool in the shade on holiday

My favourite Bill Bryson is the European tour, 'Neither Here Nor There', I pmsl so many times. Like the bit when he is trying to book a hotel room in Amsterdam, so funny.

Bumping for a fellow insomniac!

I'm afraid I am not going to be much help because mine is Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy which DD2 and I read together recently - it was like reading it for the first time all over again Smile

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/08/2015 02:41

I do love Bill Bryson too though!

Bill Bryson is one of those authors that I cannot read on public transport. I remember having to bury my head in the book of The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid with shoulders heaving - the closest I've ever got in my life to public hysteria. A Walk in the Woods is another classic.

I read The Year of Reading Dangerously at the weekend - I wouldn't describe it as laugh-out-loud funny but it's a very enjoyable read.

Oddly enough I'm reading a Martin Beck book "The Terrorists" and it's making me laugh. Hmm But it is funny.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 08/08/2015 01:38

The book adaptation of An Idiot Abroad. Funny in TV show form, hilarious in book form!

NeedSpeed · 08/08/2015 02:06

Marking place. Some promising suggestions

Years and years ago I sat opposite a man on a train who was absolutely helpless with laughter. He was reading Wilt by Tom Sharpe.

(I've since read Wilt, and the opening pages are very funny, but my memory is that it loses momentum after that.)

I know this will sound like I'm taking the mick but every Adrian Mole book has me in stitches no matter how many times I read them.
More recently The Rosie Project was a really funny read.
