Who is the ultimate femme fatale? Post to win £100 John Lewis voucher and signed copies of The Sudden Departure Of The Frasers

How does one get whatever one wants? Pop culture seems to have the answer: become a femme fatale. It seems that as long as you're a sexy woman with a red lipstick and a good line in seduction, your destructive powers can know no bounds.

Louise Candlish's latest novel, The Sudden Departure Of The Frasers, deals with one such woman. When Christy and Joe Davenport are handed the keys to their dream house, they do wonder how they nabbed it for such a low price. Christy finds herself drawn deeper into the mystery of the house's previous occupant - one Amber Fraser - and a dark and shocking secret.

For a chance to win a £100 John Lewis voucher and a signed copy of the book, tell us who is, in your opinion, the ultimate femme fatale. Does Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca reign supreme, or does she pale in comparison to Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct?

5 runners-up will also receive signed copies of the book. Post on the thread before Monday 29 June to have a chance of winning.

This competition is sponsored by Penguin Books.

This competition is now closed. Winners will be contacted shortly

Marilyn Monroe as Rose Loomis in Niagara. Gleefully evil.

Elizabeth Taylor!

Milady De Winter

Elektra King - The World Is Not Enough. Brilliantly invulnerable character. She ran rings around absolutely everyone, and I really think that she was behind the ransom part too.

skettle57 · 01/06/2015 22:27

Marilyn Monroe

PerspicaciaTick · 01/06/2015 22:29

Hmm, probably Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair.

mafletch · 01/06/2015 22:35

Lady Macbeth - every time. She's the muscle behind him as he assumes power although her conscience gets the better of her, she's a devil. Out, out damned spot! Great stuff.

Salome

sylwright · 01/06/2015 22:55

Mae West had to be the original femme fatale

azelli48414 · 02/06/2015 06:28

Julia Roberts is in my opinion the sexiest woman who leaves a man guessing and wanting more.

vegplotter · 02/06/2015 06:49

Eustacia Vye from Return of the Native. Every bit as beautiful, wild, fatal, and uncontrollable as the heath.

noscat · 02/06/2015 08:35

Another vote for Scarlett O'Hara (book version), or Zola's Nana?

dragonfly63 · 02/06/2015 09:29

Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice

Going with the dictionary definition of femme fatale, Suzanne Stone, played by Nicole Kidman, in "To Die For".

Supermam · 02/06/2015 11:43

1940s film noir was full of femmes fatales; Gilda played by Rita Hayworth in 1946 was a major character. I'm with previous posters on their negative connotations and would also prefer strong female lead as a label if we have to have a label!

BreakingDad77 · 02/06/2015 11:56

Linda Fiorentino playing Bridgette Gregory in The Last seduction - hands down every time a thing of mens nightmares.

I think she was quoted as having problems getting dates after playing that character.

SoniaLeroux21 · 02/06/2015 13:22

Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil in Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' book: Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons).

Clawdy · 02/06/2015 13:24

Has to be Cathy Ames in Steinbeck's East of Eden. Yes,she has a "malformed soul " and she certainly destroys the lives of the men who love her, but her beauty and charisma make her live in the reader's mind for years!

Wheresthattoo · 02/06/2015 14:33

Those spiders that eat their mate when they're done!
Or if we're talking fictional I'd say Maid Marian.....

ladydepp · 02/06/2015 14:34

It has to be Scarlett O'Hara - book AND film. Strong woman in a man's world. She is utterly ruthless and never gives up. She wore a dress made out of curtains to get her rich man and save Tara!! Grin
