The miniaturist

I'm about a quarter of the way through this and struggling to get sucked in, does it get better? Or for those who loved it, tell me why. I really want to like it!

As for The Miniaturist I loved it even though it made me very sad. I thought Johannes was a great character, gentlemanly, wise and ahead of his time. I loved his stern sister Marin too. The story gets darker and more depressing though and that upset me a lot. From the first chapter I was ensnared and couldn't wait to get into bed each night to read more of it. I understand though that is not to everyone's taste.

Well this thread is excellent timing - just finished The Miniaturist last night.

All I can say is hmm

Interesting historical context but the plot??? Big disappointment and can't see what all the fuss was about.

I enjoyed it but I really think it could have been amazing with a better ending. Such interesting characters in a fabulous setting, but it was just frustratingly unfinished for me.
