"Secret History" anyone

I am just rereading "Secret History" by Donna Tartt for the umpteenth time. and still loving it. Lots of people I know hate it, because they thought it was pretentious and "too greek". ( it's about Classics students, what do you expect?)

Anyone else read it?

Yes, first read it about 7 years ago and read it over and over and over and over lol (I was a Classics student at the time as well). I think I wrote an Alevel book report on it too.
I havent read it for about a year, I think its about time I dug it out and read it again.
I found it very intelligently written, really drew me in and I loved the fact that I had to keep my brain switched on when I read it.

Oh, love it, love it, love it.

It is pretentious as all hell but it's also beautifully written and a brilliant story. The ending is disappointing, though - it feels as if she loses control of it a little. But you've made me want to dig it out and read it again

Same here, I used to read and re-read that book -loved it! Must see if I can find it again.
Did Donna Tartt write any other novels, anyone know?

am so glad there are other fans here. There were a few things i didn't like about the book, chiefly, most of the women characters. I thought Camilla was completely unconvincing and I got really bored of Richard mooning over her all the time. But the descriptions of New England, and being young again, and reading Homer, and of being happy being unhappy!

Donna Tartt had a second book out a couple of years ago whose name escapes me at the moment. I read it and hated it. I couldn't keep going long enough to find out how it ended.

Yeah, I loved this book, not that impressed with her second book. Nowhere near as good.

oh, I love it.
lent someone my copy though and can't remember who... will have to tral charity shops for another one as you've made me want to read it again now.

Bought The Little Friend (her second one) a month or so ago, and it was quite good, but nowhere near as good as Secret History.

Fauve · 06/11/2006 09:22

I recently re-read it and loved it just as much. Shame about Little Friend. It's about time she published another one, isn't it? Maybe she'll be back on form.

TwoIfBySea · 06/11/2006 22:57

Yes, another fan here and "Little Friend" was such a huge let down. I don't lend my books to anyone having experienced the borrower-who-never-returns too many times!

DH actually told this woman at work that I would swap books with her until I put him firmly in his place. No way, I am not a library.

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2006 22:59

oh god.

what i thought university was going to be like.

i was soooooo disappointed.

So many positive comments, will dig out my copy and try again. Got behind with my reading when we read it for our local reading group and haven't managed to get back to it yet. Think I only got about 30 pages in.

Will try harder!

(Am currently reading Jane Eyre as although I have an English degree, had never read it. But I am supposed to be reading Vita Sackville West's All Passion Spent. For next week. This is how I get behind...)
