Girl on the train

I just finished this in between reading two books for book club and I found it OK. It struck me that the author did a bit too much man bashing. Was it just me? Every husband or ex was either downright evil a cheat or as in the case of the 'guy on the train' a feckless lad.

I didn't guess what was coming but I wasn't reading it with too much attention. I also found the main character a bit too pathetic.

I had heard that this book was this years Gone Girl but it is nowhere near as good.

I think I have talked myself out of my 'OK' opinion to disappointing.

I put it in the 'ok' category. I just kept wondering how she had enough money to keep getting the bloody train every day when she was supposed to be skint. And necking cans of G&T, they cost a fortune.

I did finish it though which is a plus for me as I can't seem to finish anything much lately.

I much preferred it to Gone Girl, which was such a let down.

I gave up interest half way through and wiki'ed to find out the ending..... Blush

God yes Gone Girl was awful. I wanted them to kill each other and the book to end but stuck with it just to endure an even crappier ending.

I loved Gone Girl, so I can't tell if I will like this more or less Grin

I liked it, but found the last chapter or 2 very unbelievable, maybe that was the point though? That people can be very different to how we perceive them? It felt like s script for a TV drama.

Glad it wasn't just me that found it all a bit 'meh'. I enjoyed Gone Girl a bit more than this but I agree the ending was a bit anti-climactic.

Generally I thought it was very readable. But for me the book comes with a proviso. The main female players all essentially come from a similar mould, they all seem to be (as Anna says of Megan) “absent and self-involved“, and not distinctively fleshed out to really stand out as individuals. They all have the capacity to dissociate from their lives, which then ripples back to the reader, I found it a struggle to really connect with the characters. I am also not overly keen on endings where characters gather together to reflect on what has been going on and then drop the final clues into place to make a cohesive ending...

I was disappointed after all the hype. It was a good enjoyable read at first but then each chapter seemed to follow a pattern - Rachel would make a disastrous attempt to contact her ex... she would swill down some drink and her flatmate would sigh sadly.....she would desperately try and remember the crucial evening..... In the end it all got a bit tedious. Too many nasty men and fragile women! There are a lot of books like this around at the moment, and I can't see why this one has become so huge.
