Just that. I have been reading him for more than 30 years and love nearly all of his novels (see my username :))

Anyone else a reader? I know he isn't George Eliot but I love his language, his plots, the way his authorial voice moves in and out of the story, and I love the way he creates characters who you can believe live even after the page is closed.

I forgot about this thread But I must confess to not having worked out where your name comes from Blush

I also have reservations about Julian Fellowes, I hope it will be OK, Trollope has been well-served by tv adaptations in the past.

And I do hope they get someone good to play Miss Dunstable.

I'm always interested and infuriated by him. I enjoy the BTs, driven mad by the Ps. I think he describes brilliantly the stupid obstinacy of people. And it drives me bonkers. Idiotic Lily Dale. Stupid Lucy being so proud. That awful husband in He knew he was right ( which should be the subtitle if every politician's memoirs). The awful Bishop. Planty Pal. Honestly. I want to throttle them. Does that make him a genius?

FrancesHB - AnonymousBird - like you the only one I've read is The Way We Live Now - and I think it's amazing. Straight on my 'favourites' list.

I think I enjoyed it so much I'm scared I won't like the others as much!

Yup, that's me! But going to go with Barchester Towers (on the basis a lot of people have said you can skip the Warden.....)

AnonymousBird · 11/05/2015 12:59

Oh, and loads of these are down in price on Audible, though often it is still cheaper to "buy" Kindle version for £0.00 and add narration for something like £3.99.

In the 90s there was a lovely TV adaptation of the Warden, introducing a young Alan rickman as obediah slope (can't spell - you can tell I never read the book!!)? And a superb performance by Nigel Hawthorne as dr grantley. It is one of my teenage children's favourite boxed sets - they were tempted by rickman's Harry potter fame. "The bishop thinks and I agree' became a stock family phrase for a while.

Figment That was a great series (adapted by Alan Plater, IIRC).

I really loved Nigel Hawthorne as an actor; he was always worth watching. And I remember being totally amazed by Donald Pleasence as Mr Harding. I'd only ever seen him play nasty or sinister characters before that.
To be honest, it was a talented cast all round.

cornflakegirl · 16/05/2015 10:05

That was a great adaptation - although the first two episodes where they cover The Warden are pretty slow - nothing happens, and none of Trollope's narration to rescue it. I love Alan Rickman as Slope, and the amazing Geraldine McEwan as Mrs Proudie. I have her voice in my head when I read the books.

I'm venturing to the York Trollope Society next week, as they are discussing CYFH, which I'm just finishing. I posted about the book on my Facebook Trollope group with the header "CYFH Spoilers", which one member thought was an acronym for "Cover Your Fucking Head"!

I'm finding AT fans to be unfailingly kind and friendly so trying not to be too terrified about going to the meeting!

This is an author I have neglected. This will be remedied. I love Dickens, Tolstoy, the Brontes, George Eliot but Trollope I only know through the odd dramatisation. Thank you.
