I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, anything by Alan Moore, and biographies like Persepolis and Alison Bechdel's Fun Home.

Not sold on superhero comics thus far, apart from Alan Moore's Batman comic. Open to suggestions!

OnHer - any specific recommendations for Will Eisner? Always see his signature around but I don't know what he's best known for

troubled souls by Gareth Ennis is excellent for a oneshot.

Garth ennis's run on Hellblazer was also really good. If you like Sandman you'll probably like the early hellblazer ones. Disclaimer: I haven't read anything of it since about 1998.

The two Posy Simmonds graphic novels are good, but there's just the two.

Fables, now there's a rich seam. It concerns the lives of fairytale characters who have had to take refuge in this world following upheavals in their own. I wasn't too impressed with volume one, an apparent detective story, but after that the series really takes off. And if you like it, there are several spin offs.

Locke and Key. Just great. Elevator pitch: Like Buffy, but with Martha's vineyard. Not enough of them, though!

Chew. Well made detective stories about a cop who can discern the history of anything he puts into his mouth.

I really like Fables, seconding Yes's recommendation. I need to catch up on the newer volumes in the series though.

Just been over to my (5Blush) graphic novel shelves. A great series I had forgotten is 'Y: The Last man' about a guy who survives a disease that kills all the other men, leaving him in an apocalyptic woman's world trying to work out why he was different. Many twists and turns

A series that took off for DH but not so much for me was 'the unwritten'. Apparently 'cos of my lack of concentration. Hmm It concerns boundaries between fact, fiction, and fantasy and is a bit 'meta'.

This is great, definitely going to check out Preacher and Fables

Bayou Arcana - Markosia
Bloodfella - Markosia
Longship - Timebomb Comics

When I took the children to the London Super Comic Show. I wanted a book signing by GM Jordan & they wanted to look at the comics, we ended up at the Markosia stand & I was surprised at the quality.

My son really likes Marvel because of the movies, but I picked up Bayou Arcana & got a copy of Bloodfellas signed by the writer and artist. I was really surprised at how great both were, we now pay more attention to the small publishers because they seem to have more original stories.

Also Longship by Timebomb comics was a beautifully told story & both my daughter & I loved the artwork and colors.
