Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who contributes to this topic. since I started following it I have read:

Uttermost Part of the Earth from the less well known books thread - thank you so much for this book - recommended it to a friend too and he loved it and my stock as an interesting reader has soared

Period Piece from same thread. loved it

Gentlemen and Players from the "what is this book about a boarding school" thread - listening to it on cd in my car and I don't mind driving any teen anywhere as a result. Spent an hour in traffic today and was happy as a clam whereas normally I'd be spitting.

Louise Penny from some other thread-listening to inspector gamache in the car for past few months and it has saved my sanity

numerous novels from the scary novel thread that I had never heard of before now

Lots of other books - can't remember them all.

I got all of these books/cds from my local library - one of the best social inventions ever, the free library.

Anyway, thanks. I am always looking for new books/new authors, especially new old authors if you know what i mean.

:)

This is the best part of MN, as far as I'm concerned.

Your thanks echoed, tenfold, to all who post here!

Southeastdweller · 03/04/2015 18:20

No problem! And thank you, OP, and everyone else.

My TBR pile is getting higher and higher mainly because of this part of MN but there's worse problems to be had Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 03/04/2015 18:25

Between recommendations on here and on Goodreads, my tbr list is going to take the rest of my life to clear, assuming I live to 200 Grin

My favourite discovery has been Robert Macfarlane but there have been so many more too.

JulyKit · 03/04/2015 18:29

Thank you for starting this thread. Smile

I hadn't heard of any of the books you mention, and now I am intrigued! Grin

gailforce1 · 03/04/2015 20:17

Totally agree with Remus that this is the best part of MN. Somehow I feel heartened to know that there are plenty of people still reading - that it is not a "dying" past-time, that books are still important and that we enjoy the freedom to read what we choose.

DianeLockhart · 03/04/2015 20:19

Oh gentleman and players was amazing, had forgotten about that book!

whatwoulddexterdo · 03/04/2015 22:11

I should really post more on here. I lurk every day and have fab recommendations. The standout one for me was The best of our spies by Alex Gerlis. I think it was Remus who recommended it. Truly brilliant book and one I would never have found without this topic. It's 99p on Amazon at the moment and on kindle unlimited.
This is the only topic I really bother with on mumsnet now. Occasionally I will read The Doghouse but too long in the tooth for Aibu etc
For those of you who haven't done so I urge you to join the mumsnet book club. Again great recommendations and proper post read discussions.
Also I like the fact that you can disagree with another poster on here without it turning into a row. There is a healthy level of respect on here for other points of view.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/04/2015 22:31

Not me, Dexter. I haven't read it. Googling it immediately!

HumphreyCobbler · 03/04/2015 22:34

Remus, you have form for excellent recommendations, I only read The Dark Tower series because of you. Those books haunt me.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/04/2015 22:36

Me too - am due a re-read pretty soon, I think!

whatwoulddexterdo · 04/04/2015 08:43

Sorry Remus, it was BOF, who recommended this one and there is an old thread, I can't do links. It is true though that you are good for recommendations.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2015 19:12

:)

I am in need of recommendations myself right now tbh.

MargoReadbetter · 04/04/2015 19:12

Me too! I've 'done' other topics over the years on MN but the Books section always brings something new.

BestIsWest · 04/04/2015 19:16

Gutted I didn't think of MargoReadBetter as a name!

MargoReadbetter · 04/04/2015 19:22

maudpringles · 04/04/2015 19:32

I am so very grateful for some cracking recommendations too.
Great thread OP Smile

lifelorn · 14/04/2015 15:30

Thank you for the recommendations.
I was lurking on here as it is my turn to choose the book for our book club, the book reviews and best seller lists seem to consist of the same few best selling authors.

It is difficult to find older books. Thank you all of the above look interesting.

tumbletumble · 14/04/2015 19:25

OP, are you on the 50-book challenge thread? My favourite MN thread ever Smile

ClaraDeLaNoche · 18/04/2015 11:20

Well thanks to you OP for starting this thread. I have just finished Gentlemen and Players- fab. And read the Alex Gerlis book last week and loved it. Feeling a bit bereft. Any more ?

DuchessofMalfi · 18/04/2015 11:53

I loved Gentlemen and Players too.

Have you read Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series? If not, then I would recommend them. There's eight novels in the series now and I love them Smile

ClaraDeLaNoche · 18/04/2015 14:52

Thanks Duchess, I'll give them a go.

goingtobefree · 21/04/2015 23:20

Just wanted to say thanks as well, just finished The best of our spies , really liked it.

SerenaJoy · 21/04/2015 23:29

I'm emerging from a fog of sleep deprivation and getting back into proper reading again.

Uttermost Part of the Earth sounds really interesting, I'm off to search Abe Books Smile

Canyouforgiveher · 21/04/2015 23:38

Just finished Academy Street (recommended on here) sad but lovely

just read Proper Bostonians by Charles Amory which is probably ungettable outside of Boston but it was fascinating.

About to start Until You're Mine and The Old Ways - both from MN although The Old Ways is not from a fiction thread.

Will try the Susan Hill series. And the best of our spies by Alex Gerlis

In addition to loving this forum, I love libraries.
