Books for my husband

For our anniversary my husband and I always give each h other a book. For him it's no problem as I have a wish list as long as Route 66 Grin. He loves spy novels and has read all of John le carre, and other spy books. Can anyone recommend a gripping spy type book? He's read a few William Boyd also and enjoyed them. Any suggestions willbe gratefully received!

Has he read any Graham Greene?

Aly Monroe has written some good spy books set in the 1940s . the 1st one is the Maze of Cadiz. There is one by Ian McEwan called (I think) The Innocent.

Charles Cummings - very much a more modern Le Carre. Both DH & I have enjoyed them enormously.

You could also have a look at Alan Furst.

Thanks all. He has read all of these! He has read graham Greene too but not end of the affair which I loved!

He's read them all! OK what about something not quite a spy book, more of a thriller like Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith. Set in Stalinist Russia so you have a similar atmosphere to a spy novel in some respects.

Alternatively, has he tried Robert Harris? Enigma and Fatherland are both good reads.

Ben McIntyre writes about real life spies - Agent Zigzag, Operation Mincemeat - they are quite interesting.

FriendlyLadybird · 30/03/2015 23:09

My DH also a big Le Carre fan loves Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon books. Allon is an art restorer and occasional spy. About 15 books have been published in the series so far, which could keep you going for quite some time!

Depending on his age and if he likes audio books in the car you could try
www.amazon.co.uk/Dick-Barton-Special-Agent-Crimes/dp/1408426102

I also enjoyed Brad Thor's Takedown

My DH was never a big reader, but a couple of years ago read the first of the original Ian Fleming James Bond books and got hooked . Very dated in attitudes to sexism etc but he found that in itself a real eye opener too - a slice of social history

You might try "The Abrupt Physics of Dying" by Paul E Hardisty. It is a thriller that rattles around Yemen and is tense and absorbing... www.tripfiction.com/thriller-set-in-yemen/

Look no further, OP - Charles Cumming is your DH's next favourite author.

Ben McIntyre's books are all good.

Gavin Lyall - Maxim series
Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household
Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers

WhatABaklava · 04/04/2015 19:11

My DH Likes Charles Cummings novels too.

BirdyArms · 05/04/2015 21:22

I was also going to suggest Ben McIntyre. DH loved A Spy Among Friends.

AnonymousBird · 16/04/2015 11:08

Charles Cumming, all the way. Really good. I love them and pass them on to DH.

Also, autobiographies big for DH.
