What makes someone "Well Read"

Do you think it means they have read all the classics or they have read from a wide variety of authors or subjects?

I think it means being familiar with not only classic and modern literature - both in original English and in translation - but also with a broad knowledge of history, politics, philosophy, etc.

I'm reasonably ok at the first part of my answer, shamefully lacking in the second part. Too many books and not enough time
