For love of Seven Dolls by Paul Gallico, is a wonderful love story. The short stories of F.Scott Fitzgerald, brilliant., the best short stories ever written. Anna of the five towns. I love all all the Arnold Bennett , potteries stories.
Anne of Green Gables a very famous classic. Captain Corellis Mandolin. The Tin drum by Gunther Grass. Perfume by Robert Susskind. That should keep you going.
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist , by Robert Tresswell. This is a polital book but a must read and it is also a good read like ' The fire next time' by the Soledad Brothers.

Just read "Daughter" by Jane Shemilt. Very moving. It's on Times Bestseller list and Richard & Judy Bookclub.

I see that the theme of slavery, or racial issues, runs through all your choices. With that in mind, have a look at:

The Invention of Wings, also by Sue Monk Kidd, the author of The Secret Life of Bees, is even better IMO. And interesting because based loosely upon a true story of two sisters who campaigned persistently against slavery although born into a plantation family.

The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier, and A Respectable Trade by Philippa Gregory are very readable if a little bit sanitised.

More challenging, and probably a better book, is The Long Song, by Andrea Levy. The cadences of the language take a little bit of getting used to but I think the narrative style works very well.

There's the famous Roots by Alex Haley - a long time since I read it - and another big read, Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth, which I found engrossing first time round and am planning to reread soon.

If you can get it (not sure if it's still in print) Billy by Albert French. It's an eye-opener. Shocking and upsetting, a powerful novel. Unforgettable.

I'm new to all of this. I have just finished reading 'Free to be Tegan' it's on Amazon Kindle for 99p. Author Mary Grand.

She is a friend of mine - so I'm not sure if I'm even allowed to mention it because of advertising rules? No idea so if someone can tell me. She hasn't asked me to post this. It's about a girl who escapes a cult. It's her debut novel and I really enjoyed it. Let me know what you think if you read it.
