Want to get DS a nice Christmas book. He is at that "in-between" stage. Not really into listening to long books/chapter books as yet but I don;t want to get a picture book that will be a bit your for him. I know he'd like the Harry and the Dinosaurs but I think it's a bit young for him.

Am off out for afternoon but will check back later!

What about an annual. My ds loves to get an annual as there's stories, things to colour and puzzles etc. and if you wait until a few days after christmas The Entertainer reduce their annuals to around £1. I got a couple there last year, good if he's not into anything specific.

Horrid henry are good for boys.

I was told recently that if you think your DS would like a book then get it, its better for them to read something they like. (this was from a very well respected man, who started Storysacks) It was concerning me not wanting to buy my son the latest horrid henry book as it was too easy for him at 9YO

I have a son the same age as yours also and I have got him some more challenging books and the Harry and the Dinosaur christmas book. He loves aninals so when asked which book he wanted he asked for one about a Polor bear (non fiction-intended for adults! As long as he's keen i', happy

Why not take him to the library and see what he picks up?
There are some great picture books that are challenging and deeper than the ones intended for younger children. Titles that spring to mind are The Wolves in the Walls, Traction Man, Beware of Boys, Beware of Girls - can't remember the authors though.
Colin Thompson books are great too - lots to see and unusual stories too.

TooTicky - we are in Budapest - English language libraries thin on the ground!

I am looking for a Christmassy type book or story - starting a tradition of a present from us on Xmas Eve - new PJ's, Xmas book and Xmas DVD.

I have bought this for DS for that very reason.

FairyMum · 29/10/2006 12:19

Oh yes...the in-between stage. My DS1 is 5 too and it's so difficult to find what to read for him. He still likes the Blue Kangaroo books. There's a Christmas-one, but I can't remember what its called. Try searching Amazon?

SherlockLGJ · 29/10/2006 12:21

Oh bugger just seen it is 3+ hope it is not toooooo young.

I bought this and we watch it on Christmas Eve. As opposed to getting a new one every year.

TooTickyTheAppleBobber · 29/10/2006 18:49

This looks lovely. They also do a version of the Baboushka story. I don't know if Barefoot ship to other countries, but if you want to buy it and can't you can always buy it through me (I have recently signed up to sellBarefoot books). Sorry, this sounds like a shameless plug but it's not - I was eying up this book myself yesterday

Nick Butterworth (Percy Park Keeper etc) does a book called 'The Nativity' and it's about a reception class doing their Christmas play. It's hilarious and the pictures are great.

There is another funny book called 'Jesus' Christmas Party' and it's the Christmas story from the Innkeepers point of view.

We still love Kippers Christmas Eve by Mick Inkpen, he does another Christmas book called Threadbear.

Also, Mog at Christmas by Judith Kerr - but like Kipper, it errs on the young side. So I'll be watching this thread on behalf of my own 5yo!

We always watch The Bear and The Snowman on Christmas Eve.

foxtrot · 30/10/2006 07:07

Do you have 'Twas the Night before Christmas'? There a lots of versions available.

KTeepee · 30/10/2006 07:23

There is a new Horid Henry book out soon - HH's Christmas Cracker. My ds (also 5) has just started getting into these (but he still likes his picture books too!)

I thought this looked nice too but know what age it is suitable for...

We have one called "Little Robin Red Vest" by Jan Fearnley. It's the story of a little robin who gives away all his vests to others, and is left cold on Christmas Eve. He is visited by Father Christmas, who gives him a new red vest!. Brilliant story, my ds are 6 and 8 and they still love it. Amazon have it, in hardback, board book and paper back. it is a really goiod story.

BudaBeast · 30/10/2006 08:37

Lots of ideas - thanks everyone!

Keeping bumped for anyone else who is interested (or any other ideas of course!!)

We have the Snowman and a few others - must check what we actually DO have!
