Not into fantasy / sci fi nor fluffy teen romance

Any ideas??

We Were Liars by E Lockhart was quite good. Has some romance in it though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/02/2015 14:59

I came on to say that too, 13yr old dd enjoyed it and she's not much of a reader.

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/02/2015 15:00

Actually I'll piggyback if you don't mind as I could do with similar reccs.

Homemadeapplepie · 26/02/2015 16:04

The Universe Versus Alex Woods
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime
Noughts and Crosses (and other Mallory Blackman)
We Were Liars

My teens recently enjoyed "The Art of being normal" by Lisa Williamson.

cdtaylornats · 26/02/2015 16:38

The Vitals series by Kathy Reich's is an adventure/mystery series for teenagers.

cdtaylornats · 26/02/2015 16:39

Vitals not Vitals

How I live now by Meg Rosoff

HubertCumberdale · 26/02/2015 16:51

Another vote for Noughts and Crosses.
I know they're a bit fantasy, but His Dark Materials?
Miss Peregrines School for Extraordinary Children
Never Let Me Go (or is that scifi? It's not like, spaceships or anything).
Journey to the River Sea

The fault in our Stars
Wonderful book- everyone should read it!

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/02/2015 17:58

Dd did read and loved The Fault in our stars.
Never let me go is one of my favourites, but she's so far ignored my suggestion.
She did read Men, women and children recently, which brought up some interesting discussions since I read it too.

LosingNemo · 26/02/2015 18:07

A second vote for Meg Rosoff - How I live now, also After Tomorrow by Gillian Cross. At her age I loved Pride and Prejudice too.

Never let me go

It might be a bit young for her but Michelle Magorians Back Home is great. I loved it at 12 but by 16 I was starting to be able to appreciate the points of view of other characters in the book, like Rusty's mum.

changeznameza · 26/02/2015 23:49

'Once' by Morris Gleitzman - moving and absolutely brilliant. There is a whole series of them ('Now', 'Then', 'After'). Set in 2nd world war but they don't presume any prior knowledge and are about people rather than war. Might be a bit young but a 16yo will race through them if they've not already encountered them...

Wellwellwell3holesintheground · 27/02/2015 07:27

What about the Tillerman cycle by Cynthia Voigt? Starts with Homecoming. Have just reread them for the first time since I was a young teen and they are still brilliant. Also K M Peyton - Pennington's 17th Summer.

A Gathering Light by Jennifer Donnelly

MsAmerica · 28/02/2015 01:37

I was given Pride and Prejudice when I was 15 or 16, which was eventually a game-changer for me.

Lately, though, I'm more and more liking the idea of giving kids non-fiction.
