I usually stick with books - hardly ever do I give up. But this one? Page 80 and still I feel like it's "setting the scene"? I had no idea what it is about before I started, just had it given to me by my FIL ( who started it but soon gave up) and god I feel like it's dragging!
My question is: does it carry on like this, ie her alluding to her sister's disappearance throughout most of the book and describing how she feels about it and how she can't understand it, until some Major Twist at the end? Or do we get something soon? Cos I really don't think I can carry on for another 200 pages like this!

IIRC, you do start to get some answers relatively early on. I had the same concern as you when I read it and was pleasantly surprised that the major 'twist' isn't right at the end. It has been a while though. I enjoyed it, maybe not as much as some people seem to have but I think it is probably worth persevering with.

GettingFiggyWithIt · 23/02/2015 22:53

I loved it. Surely you are near the twist though...could have sworn it was p79

I loved it.

persist, it is worth it (IMHO)

getting - wow, that's impressive! Can't believe you remember the page numbers! I'm actually on page 76, I was rounding up Blush will now put bedroom light back on and read the next few pages, thanks!

keep going, keep
going - the beginning drags and then POW! the second two-thirds are brilliant

christinarossetti · 23/02/2015 23:05

I liked it. Once the major twist is out in the open it flows much better.

Really liked her writing style.

Homemadeapplepie · 23/02/2015 23:22

Read it to the end but didn't really like it, kept thinking it would get better!

justkeeponsmiling · 23/02/2015 23:23

Oh ok. Just got to the twist. Ok... I'm not really sure! Will give it a bit longer.
I guess I really wasn't expecting this, more like some more "conventional" twist?

Page 77 btw :)

Stick with it. The kooky college friend /puppet jarred but the actual guilt / experiments / impact is compelling especially as based on real life cases (you can find this on youtube) but i would say that as I am interested in psychology, attachment theory, language acquisition. It broke my heart. Knew you were near to the revealWink i only know that as a review ruined it for me then excused its spoiler by indicating how early on it came...but i would have liked to have read it blind.

NotALondoner · 23/02/2015 23:31

So you nearly gave up on a book that had a major plot twist on the very next page? Ha ha!

MellieFitz · 24/02/2015 00:02

See now I got to the twist and was so hacked off that that was the twist that I've given up with it. Just not interested . Also fou do the writing style a bit annoying but would have carried on if the twist was a bit less meh.

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 24/02/2015 21:53

I persevered with this until I got to the twist, then I gave up completely. Absolutely dire. I would not have started this had I known what the 'twist' was. PM if you like and I'll tell you.

I shudder to think I gave this rubbish house room.

justkeeponsmiling · 25/02/2015 06:50

Haha, thanks Dame but I actually continued and finished the book (had lots of time the past two nights as was up with DS who is poorly)!
I got to the twist and nearly didn't continue but gave it a go and actually found it very moving and very well written. In fact the writing seemed to improve loads after the twist, she somehow stops waffling and gets to the point much more quickly.
I think the main problem with the book is that people either read reviews etc beforehand and so know what to expect and are aware of the twist which takes away the surprise element and I'm sure makes you read the story in a completely different way, or you know nothing about it except the bare bones and start reading it expecting it to be some kind of thriller/mystery, get to the twist and think wtaf?! I fell into the second category which is why I nearly gave up. It's tricky but I'm not sure how to overcome this problem. Overall I thought it was a very good, thought provoking read. I have recommended the book to my mum now but told her not to read up about it and not to expect a thriller :)

I loathed this book with a passion, didn't finish it and that's extremely rare for me
