I have almost finished it and I love it.

I love following a family through their lives. I have read some of the Cazalet books and another set of books which are similar but I can't remember the name of them right now.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Poldark. There are 12 books in total following the life of Ross Poldark.
The remake is due to be shown on bbc one in a couple of weeks too.

There are some really good long stories on that Goodreads list. Ought to keep you busy for a while Grin

Was going to suggest Gone With the Wind and A Horseman Riding By series by R FOR Delderfield, South Riding by Winfrey Holtby. All ones I've read and liked.

R F Delderfield

I fancy The Far Pavillions.

Snozzle I have never read the books but can't wait to see Aiden Turner the TV programme.

Thank you for the recommendations.

Penny Vincenzi is my guilty pleasure - big fat family sagas. There was a trilogy too, called the Spoils of Time.

I used to save them for when I was travelling for work, they were easy enough to be able to read them in a busy airport but also absorbing enough to make the time fly.

How funny. I love The Thorn Birds and am just about to reread but have recently added The Far Pavilions to my wishlist. I remember loving the series in the 80s.

RF Delderfield - Horseman Riding By (3 books)
Also God Is an Englishman - Swann Family Saga (3 books)
And The Avenue Goes to War (2 books)

Love them all - have read them again and again.

U2TheEdge I can't wait to see the TV programme either. I was very lucky to have watched them filming some of it at Charlestown and I got Aidan's autograph. Grin
It looks brilliant.
I'm going to re-read the books soon and I'll have the image of Aidan as Ross in my head this time.

Cloud Street, by Tim Winton, another Australian story, revolving around the lives of one family.its been a while since I read it but I really enjoyed it.

I read the Thorn Birds when it was first published in the 1970s and soon after read The Far Pavilions. They would both be in my top 100 books of all time.
Set in India but has the same feel and very weepy.
Csardas must have been written around the same time I think. I was obviously going through my romantic, historic saga phase Grin.

How about A woman of substance. Its about a poor girl from Yorkshire who builds her own business empire. Loved the book and the mini series.

AliceLidl · 25/02/2015 11:16

Have you read The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, and the second book whose name I knew until I wanted to tell you it?

That kind of follows the same families, the first one tells the story of a community wanting to build a cathedral, and the ups and downs and changes in fortune that this brings to them. The second one is set about a hundred years later and has the ancestors of those people wanting to build a bridge.

I think I read The Thorn Birds and Gone with the Wind at about the same time, and enjoyed them both.

And it's been a long time since I read it, but Anne Rice wrote a book called Lasher, which is one in a series called The Mayfair Witches, telling the story of a family of New Orleans women (and the occasional man I think) who inherit powers of witchcraft. I think that series might cover the lives of the same family requirement, although obviously with a supernatural element to it all.

The Fever Tree

Elsasalterego · 01/03/2015 22:03

Roots. Follows about 4 generations. Also made into a series in the 80s!

Samiam123 · 12/03/2015 11:47

I loved the Thorn Birds, the Far Pavilions and Gone with the Wind. Try the Forsyte Saga too!

LexLoofah · 12/03/2015 17:44
