I started it but got distracted , it did seem good so will go back soon I got it on kindle for 2 or 3 euros it goes up and down in price.

spinningheart · 28/02/2015 01:21

It doesn't fall flat! I loved it as well, so much that when I finished it I e mailed Niall Williams to tell him and express my admiration. I read 'four letters of love' by him when it was first published and loved it too, I'll definitely try to re-read this year.
Interesting that I was sure my friend, who has very similar taste, would enjoy it and she didn't at all she thought it was gimmick-y but I thought the reference to other writers and classics was so unique and impressive.
Anyway, will stop gushing. Hope you didn't feel disappointed!

mmack · 28/02/2015 11:38

I ordered it from the library based on your recommendation, Spinningheart. I'm No. 2 in the queue for it now so should get it this month. Have you read anything else really good lately?

spinningheart · 28/02/2015 13:05

Hi mmack, at the moment I am halfway through The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni. Its an enormous tome of a book, an Italian classic that apparently high school students all across Italy loathe! Its really quite good though, the main story is about a pair of young lovers in rural Italy who want to marry but the girl has caught the eye of a local 'desperado' and he obstructs the wedding and the couple have to separate and flee the region. The story meanders though, there are so far about 4 different subplots. I recommend - although my reading pile is growing exponentially behind it and I'm getting a little restless.
That to-read pile includes The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, and The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri, and The Free by Willy Vlautin. (Hooray!)
What about you? I'm not snooping but I noticed you on the 50 modern classics thread - I was trawling for suggestions. That thread is fantastic but i fear i'm not 'able' enough for a lot of the books on it.

£10.00 on the Kindle! Does it hold the secret of eternal life? Shock

DuchessofMalfi · 01/03/2015 13:03

It was discounted to £1.99 a few weeks ago. Probably will be again some time. Doesn't contain the secret to life, the universe or anything :o but is growing on me - am just over half way through.

Quiet, literary, gently humorous, intelligent. I rather like it but it has taken a little while to get into the story. I do admit to having a liking for Irish literature and read quite a lot of novels by Irish writers.

CoteDAzur · 01/03/2015 20:42

It would have to do much more than grow on me for £10. Like, grow on me and vibrate Grin

DuchessofMalfi · 01/03/2015 20:48

If it comes down in price again it's definitely worth a punt. Should be out in paperback later this year.

Vibrating books - now there's a thought. Perhaps one for the special edition of FSOG :o

whippetwoman · 09/03/2015 14:10

This was my favourite book of last year and I read 83 of them as part of the 50 book challenge! I really did think it was wonderful. I can't understand why it didn't make the Booker short list. It's a great book for people who love reading and literature, if that makes sense.

mmack · 12/03/2015 13:26

This book is brilliant-it made me laugh out loud several times and then I cried though the last few chapter
I loved the way it was an old-fashioned literary book and at the same time set in contemporary post-boom Ireland. There isn't ever going to be another book with lots of Dickens and also a critique of how broadband was rolled out in Ireland.

sparrowcottage · 16/03/2015 16:12

love love love it.. now lost as to what to read next!
