Help with my snobby bookclub

It is my turn to pick our next book for our book club and I am stumped. And a bit scared TBH.

It needs to be fairly highbrow and literary I'm afraid. I don't know the other women all that well (apart from the friend who introduced me to the group) and they have all been picking books that are either literary classics or modern winners of Nobel and Pulitzer prizes. So no chick lit - I think I would be kicked out of the group Grin

I'd like to do something English or British because our current book is Runaway (Alice Munro) set in Canada.

I've already read lots of classics myself but don't really mind a repeat. I just want a book that won't make me look stupid.

So wise MNers - any recommendations?

Gone With The Wind. Wonderful to read and discuss.
The Gift of Rain byTan Twan Eng. Beautiful, well written book about how the Japanese infiltrated Malaysia but really about relationships. The author was short listed for the Booker Prize so fine for the snobby element. All the light we cannot see by Antony Doerr is another by a Pulitzer winner. Good luck, listen carefully, look thoughtful and let others do the talking.

Place-marking because of all the great book recommendations! The very thought of being in a book club gives me the heebie jeebies I'm afraid. I read lots and did a fairly literature-heavy MFL degree, but reading is a solitary pleasure for me and I have no desire to be judged for what I read or my comments or have the pleasure spoiled by hearing my favourite books pulled to bits!

Anyway, am going through this thread to make a shopping list! I'm a big Robertson Davies fan btw. Can't stand John Fowles though and thought The Magus was unbearably pretentious.

Hope your choice goes down well OP, whatever you end up picking!
