It's January, nearly Feb, which is just as rubbish and I've also done Dry Jan- so frankly I'm a bit bored and my heavyweight reading isn't looking too appealing. Suggestions please for light, escapist but well written please!

What sort of thing do you like for escapism (fantasy? crime? general?). 'Love, Nina' is very light and amusing if you've not read it yet.

Have you read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern? It might fit the bill - easy to read - magical fantasy, escapist. Or perhaps Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch - if you like that, there's four more in the series. I love them.

Christopher Brookmyre's new crime thriller. Dead girl walking. I read it in 2 days. It's a bit pricy at the moment though so I'd wait until prices have gone down to something sensible. It was £3 cheaper the day before publication

Bit of magical realism? LR Fredericks - Fate

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn ( made it into a movie) Great read, funny and creepy at the same time.

Not escapist, but very readable: The Panoptican - best read I've had so far this year.

skolastica · 19/02/2015 16:50

sorry, forgot the author - Jenni Fagan

magimedi · 19/02/2015 17:39

Have just put the Panoptican on my wish list - looks very good.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

I read this in effectively one sitting interrupted by 4 hours sleep. I've been reading scince fiction for 50 years so I don't often come across new ideas these days but this one did it.

Harry lives and dies then lives again, but starting at the same birthplace and time with all the memories of each time he has lived.

A belated thank you- some great suggestions which I'm going to work through. It's been quite a month (nothing drastic just the usual child/work/home blackhole of leisure oblivion) but looking forward to getting back to some reading.
