Books you wish you could read for the first time again

I'm putting together a rough list of books I want to read in 2015 and decided to put One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest on there. I've read it before, countless times, but every time I feel a bit sad that I'll never get the same feeling I had at the end of the novel when things come to a head. I can remember exactly where I was when I finished reading it (back of the school bus going home, must have been my last GCSE year) and the fact that I re-read the last few pages over again because I couldn't believe what had happened.

Anyone else had a book that they wish they could read for the first time again? What would it be?

Magician by Raymond Feist. All the Harry Potter books. I grew up waiting for each one to come out and it was a magical part of my childhood.

StrawberryMojito · 24/01/2015 22:08

Birdsong
The world according to Garp

DrankSangriaInThePark · 24/01/2015 22:20

Testament of Youth. And not because of the film! I read it in 1986 and it changed my life, my way of thinking. It's not fiction, of course but amazing nevertheless.

The Picture of Dorian Gray. I love that book and wish I could have the pleasure of reading it for the first time all over again.

Excellent question, Holden

The Goldfinch. Such masterful writing and the plot has many surprises.

Sootgremlin · 24/01/2015 23:37

This is great, especially as people have mentioned books I have still to read so quite exciting.

It is a good question, because there are some books I love, some Jane Austen for example, that I love the familiarity of having read multiple times, and that's not quite the same thing.

My DH had never read To Kill a Mockingbird until just recently and seeing him in that 'can't wait to get back to my book' haze took me back to being 16 with my school copy, just reading and reading and not stopping for dinner.

The one that springs to mind for me is Woman in White. I am always envious when I hear someone has begun reading it.

The Museum of Innocence by Orphan Pamuk

The Goldfinch - I felt so sad that I would never be able to read that in the same way again.

HoldenCaulfield80 · 25/01/2015 19:54

Magi, dweller -The Goldfinch is on my 2015 list, I'm hoping it's as good as The Secret History!

Gremlin - imagine reading that scene with Atticus and Boo at the end Gain for the first time... shivers

The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro

The White Castle by Orhan Pamuk

Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I can remember exactly where I sat reading it. Have re-read it and loved it, but the first time was the best.

Also yes, The Secret History. So compelling.

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 22:29

Yes, holden, when you think the story is all but told then there is the last twist.

Yy Captain Corelli - 18 years old, Sumer before university, sitting on my bed in tears, my mum ran up to ask me what was wrong. First book that made me weep. Have read it since, but it had nothing like that impact again.

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 22:30

*summer, obviously Blush

The Secret History

notnowImreading · 31/01/2015 11:28

Emma, Oscar and Lucinda and To Kill a Mockingbird.

I read each of them in plain hardcovers from the charity shop so no cover art, no blurb - complete surprises in each of them that I would never have experienced if I'd had all the cover clues. I love that.

Quangle · 31/01/2015 11:32

Great Expectations. I just didn't know what was coming.

fattymcfatfat · 31/01/2015 20:03

The ring by danielle steel. I was 10 when I first read it ( have always been very advanced) I dont usually like these kind of books, im more into stephen King and james herbert. But this book was amazing and I remember my mum giving it to me and I looked at her as if she was a bit mental but I read it, started off just to humour her but I couldnt put it down.

Dapplegrey · 31/01/2015 20:05

Another vote for The Goldfinch.

Flingingmelon · 31/01/2015 20:07
