Suggestions wanted for books for nearly 3 year old DS

I feel that DS is growing out of the toddler type of books. He loves factual books about trains, boats, trucks etc but there is only so often I can cope with reading the "interesting" facts .

What sort of story books are there that we both might enjoy? As a confirmed bibliophile I feel a bit for needing advice, but I'm sure that someone can advise me .

Have you read the Gruffalo/Room on the Broom/The Snail and the Whale/The Smartest Giant in Town (all by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler)? They are fantastic for childand parent.
Picture books by Colin Thompson are great - lots to look at and talk about.
We are library addicts and make lots of good discoveries there.

Agree with tooticky - Fab books my boy loves a book called " My two left feet" about monsters at a ball learning to dance! Fav book of the year.

Look for nice bright books that will keep them intrested

CrocodileKate · 17/10/2006 20:48

Gruffalo, Gruffalo child and Room on a broom are some of the very few childrens books that i actually enjoy reading.

Oh I also like a rhyming story about Eddie and his teddy but can't for the life of me remember who wrote it.
Eddie's off to find his teddy
Eddie's teddie's name is Freddie
He left him in the woods somewhere
it's dark and horrible in there.....

CrocodileKate · 17/10/2006 20:51

Just found him, Jez Alborough

Have a look onThe Book People for some great picture story book packs. Great bargains on there!

Marina · 17/10/2006 20:53

When ds was this age he loved the Amazing Machines series by Ant Parker and Tony Mitton, eg Flashing Fire Engines. Also the Benny the Breakdown series, written by the incredibly named Willy Smax (I think he's Belgian) and Keren Ludlow - these are really sweet.
And all of the Big Red Train books by Benedict Blathwayt.
Thankfully ds also still liked Maisy and the Trotter Street stories - in fact anything by Shirley Hughes. But all of the above are bearable.

robinpud · 17/10/2006 20:53

Duck in the truck and anything else by Jes Alborough
My mum and dad make me laugh
Hairy McClary-Lynley Dodd
Elmer books and others by David McKee, esp Not Now Bernard
Mick Inkpen- Penguin Small, Blue Balloon etc
Alfie books
Pass the Jam Jim, need a trim Jim etc etc Kaye Umansky
Oliver's vegetables, Oliver's Fruit salad, Oliver's milshake
My Gumpy's outing/car
anythig by the Ahlbergs but Burglar Bill is good.

Marina · 17/10/2006 20:56

Oh, definitely Bogglaboll, as ds called him, and Duck, and Hairy McClary.
Oh, and Not Now Bernard, but not recommended for easily scared little boys!

Gameboy · 17/10/2006 20:57

Yes - second the Book People for their packs of Ten books.

Other suggestions:

Usborne Farmyard Tales stories
Usborne train stories
This is the Bear....series (And the Bad Little Girl, Picnic Lunch etc)
'Proper' Thomas the Tank stories (not the cartoon versions)
Mog
My Dad iS Fanstasic/ My Mum is/ My Grandma is.. etc
Harry & a Bucketful of Dinosaurs series...

DS2 is just 4, and we've been reading all of these for the last year.

Gameboy · 17/10/2006 20:58

Oh yes - ALL the ones RobinPud suggested!!

VanillaMilkshake · 17/10/2006 21:01

My DD loved Cat in The Hat for months and months. It's 52 pages long so she normally had that and a shorter verse book about called How Does a Dinosaur Say Goodnight each night before bed. And she actually word perfect on both.

Thank you for all the suggestions - I shall enjoy myself .

We do read stories by Shirley Hughes (I think DS could possibly "read" the whole of Dogger word for word) and have a lot of "proper" Thomas stories as well.

I think I will have a look on the bookpeople website .

Although the Little Red Train activity pack is out of stock (I had forgotten about those books - there are a few of them floating around the house).

I agree anything by Julia Donaldson, The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, A Squash & a Squeeze, etc they just seem to be easier to read when you are tired (I have been known to do them in silly voices too)

We like the Hairy McLairy books too

Book people are superb but also try "used & new" Amazon Marketplace traders too for good prices.

HeadlessHorsewoman · 18/10/2006 14:01

Hairy Maclary - love it.
