I really don't know what I think. There were points where I hated both of them, bits where I was desperate to find out what happened.

But the ending. Really?

The ending ruined it for me. And I am not really sure why..

Cooki3Monst3r · 15/01/2015 18:58

Oooh, I loved this! Not the kind of thing I normally read but a friend lent it to me. I thought it was quite funny in places, and really romantic! (I tend to get a Hmm look when I tell people that!)

runlikeagirl · 15/01/2015 19:03

I think I was beginning to love it until the end.

I kept thinking the guy in the casino was going to come forward and say he saw her talking to Desi

I thought the ending ruined it too. It just seemed a bit empty. Has anyone seen the film?

Theyvallgone · 15/01/2015 20:15

I read this a while ago so a bit vague for me now but I think I was starting to love to hate them both. Really enjoyed reading the book and trying to figure out what the heck was going on.

The ending ... totally and utterly pissed me right off! I felt it was a cop out and a statement of how weak they both were. It felt to me that the author had almost given up being bothered to think of something better come the end if that makes sense? In reality its probably supposed to be a luvvy dovey message of sorts.

I remember reading this and 'Before I go to Sleep' in quick succession and being equally eh about that one.

Laska42 · 15/01/2015 20:21

I was thinking about this today , when i heard that it was up for best female lead on oscar.. I read it about 18mths ago and thought it was good, but do you know, I cannot for the life of me remember what happened at the end any more.. in fact anything about what happened after The Big Revelation... so cant have been that good a book after all..

Cooki3Monst3r · 15/01/2015 20:43

In the end they stayed together. For the baby. For each other. Because when they were trying to be what the other one wanted them to be, they were the best person they could be, and the happiest.

runlikeagirl · 15/01/2015 21:16

I read an article where the author says it was the only possible ending. Because Amy would never be caught etc.

It made me really cross though.

OP posts:
WhatWouldJoanDo · 15/01/2015 21:19

I thought the ending intimated that she might harm the baby. When she says, "I really wish he hadn't said that". I was haunted by that for weeks.

Cooki3Monst3r · 15/01/2015 22:42

I yes Joan, me too!!! But he'd slipped hadn't he - taken his eye off the ball, not thinking and said something daft. I'm sure she put him
In his place again by the end of the day and he started to behave again.

But, no, not harm the baby. Just have him banged up for some horrible baby related crime.

CalamitouslyWrong · 15/01/2015 22:52

I hated the ending. It wasn't the only possible ending. That's just silly.

It's a good thing the poor bloody baby is fictional. Grin

Cooki3Monst3r · 15/01/2015 23:39

Maybe I'm the only one who liked the ending because I usually read trashy happy ending novels??

Were you all expecting one to kill the other?

NickyEds · 16/01/2015 09:56

The ending has left the door wide open for a sequel???

I wanted her to go to jail! Because she was The BaddySmile Maybe I'm reading too little into itConfused.

runlikeagirl · 16/01/2015 10:30

I wanted her to go to prison. I wanted one little detail to unravel the whole thing and her be shown as the sociopath she is.

WrappedInABlankie · 16/01/2015 10:43

Nicky I've seen the film, haven't read the book though Blush

I spent the ending of the film going ShockShock WTF?! But have to say the film was really good, I liked it

Moomaloo · 16/01/2015 10:45

I just read this and loved it! The ending was disappointing. I really wanted her to get caught out. Seems a bit lucky for her that desi had no alibi for the day of the abduction. She hadn't planned that bit so it could have been her undoing.
I don't think nick wanted to be with her - but it was worth it him to be with his child.

NickyEds · 16/01/2015 11:12

I wasn't sure if they would change the ending for the film, especially as so many people seem to be disappointed by it!

Cooki3Monst3r · 16/01/2015 13:43

I've not seen the film. Mainly because I can't stand to watch Ben Affleck. And everything on the trailer just looked wrong compared with what I'd imagined.

And Rosamund Pike? She's far too lovely!

NickyEds · 16/01/2015 14:15

All the way through I imagined January Jones (Betty from Mad Men) playing her-not sure why.

HollyJollyDillydolly · 16/01/2015 14:16

I haven't for round to reading the book, it's been on my kindle for ages. I've sent he film though and the ending was bizzarre!

atticusclaw · 16/01/2015 14:18

Hated it. I thought it was written to be made into a movie and read that way with no depth to the characters.

Good concept, bad book.

treaclesoda · 16/01/2015 14:24

I liked it. The characters were pretty horrible, all of them. But then, some people are pretty horrible, and often they gravitate towards each other in life...

I think the thing that annoyed me most about it was the sister's name. Go? Really? Go? I know it was short for Margo, but it just seemed so contrived that he had this wee pet name for her that it just made me irrationally angry Grin

AmyElliotDunne · 16/01/2015 14:38

I thought it was the best ending really. They were both obnoxious and their punishment is that they end up together! It's like real life, the ends don't get tied up neatly, the baddie doesn't always get caught out, people do get away with things and end up sticking in bad relationships when they are both damaging each other.

I was pleased it didn't have a more traditional ending. I must say I preferred the book to the film, but I did think both leads in the film did a great job. It's a shame the film didn't set up the 'cool girlfriend' thing a bit more strongly, it was a big part of the beginning of the book, but only really glossed over in the film. Seeing him really fall for her, thinking she was perfect, only to find out he'd been duped was a lot more dramatic in the book.

AmyElliotDunne · 16/01/2015 14:40

Cooki3, I don't usually rate Ben Affleck either, but I think he's improving with age. Despite his character being a bit of a dick in this, I did enjoy watching him.

Cooki3Monst3r · 16/01/2015 14:41

No cool girl in the film?! That was the whole point of the story, surely?
