If you are a fan of CJ Sansom/Andrew Taylor what other historical crime fiction writers do you rate?

Just that really. Trying to buy a birthday present for someone who loves Sansom and Taylor and trying to wade through all Amazon's recommendations. Not sure which is the wheat and which is the chaff.

Seem to be a lot of Sansom copycats doing the rounds.

Who do you love?

Sigh.

I haven't read any Andrew Taylor but love the Shardlake series, have you tried any of Susannah Gregory's Matthew Bartholomew books? Set in the middle-ages rather than Tudor times, I've only read a couple but keep meaning to find more.

I like Phillipa Gregory, I know it is slightly different.

Andrew Taylor's American Boy was amazing and one about an Irish Monk who was St Patrick but can't remember who wrote that.

Try SJ Parrish

I love the Falco series by Lindsey Davis. Crime solving all over the Roman Empire.

S J Parris's Giordano Bruno novels are very readable. Starts with Heresy. They are set in late Elizabethan times, he works for Sir Francis Walsingham.

I've enjoyed the series so far, one more to go and I believe another one due out later this year.

I am rather enjoying the Sebastian St Cyr series by CS Harris set during the Regency. Ripping yarns and interesting characters although I do cringe at some of the American-English phrases used by the characters.

Was going to suggest S J Parris too
