God i'd love to read it, but these days it takes me around 2 months to complete a book! I find Rankin books are best read a huge chunk at a time as they do require concentration.

I will look out for it in the local Waterstones though... I have 9 whole days off work at Christmas

foxinsocks · 11/11/2006 19:01

yes.... I agree. I'd normally read it in pretty much one go over a week but I've not had much time for uninterrupted reading recently, so I've only managed a chapter at a time! V annoying!

oooh great we are avid fans in fct me and dp fight over who reads it first --(I had to hide the last one to stp him taking it to work before I had read it)
were you happy with john hannah playing him the first series better with ken ? isn't it?

all4girlz · 11/11/2006 19:30

any good?
I have not read it yet.
dh must still have this one not had alot of time recently.

foxinsocks · 11/11/2006 19:30

oh I've always had the image of Ken Stott in my head when I've read the books even before he was cast as the role

I love Siobhan in the books but don't really like her character in the TV series

yes it is good - I'm finding it harder to get into but I think that's more because I've had less time to read. As moon was saying, what you really want to do is sit down and devour the whole thing iyswim! I'm probably not doing it justice having to read it in bits and bobs.

There's a lot more Siobhan in this one.

dh hates crime fiction (because he's a bit of a book snob ) - we fight over Jonathan Coe books - next time he brings out a new one, I'm buying 2 copies because we turn into children and do what you do and try and hide it from each other!

Luckily me and DH like totally different books. Although I did accidentally take one of his sci-fi books into the maternity unit with me due to lack of anything else to hand at the time. I ended up addicted to some mad series called Amtrak Wars and cannot even remember the author's name now!

DH is massive sci-fi fan, whereas I'm more into PD James, Rankin, Iain Banks, Ruth Rendell etc.

foxinsocks · 11/11/2006 20:50

lol some of those sci fi series are seriously addictive - I was very into science fiction in my teens and 20s, but haven't really gone back to it since then. Dh doesn't like sci fi AT ALL but has lately started getting into these historical books called historical counterfactuals (so say going back in time and doing 'what ifs' - like what if we hadn't won the war etc.).

To my great delight, when we went into a book store the other week, I found they had put these historical counterfactuals not in the History category but in with Science Fiction. How I enjoyed taking the piss out of him (oh we have a laugh dh and I, can you tell??!!).

My DH always moans about bookshops catagorising 'fantasy' as sci-fi. Such a sin in his opinion.

Just remembered... the author of the Amtrak Wars series was Patrick Tilley.

foxinsocks · 11/11/2006 21:05

that looks like a loooong series!

I was just trying to find the series I was addicted to but I can't ggrrrr.

aha found it - it was the Dune series by Frank Herbert that started me off then I read all his other ones to do with Pandora (?) I think it was. I think I read only his stuff (and a few other sci fi authors) for a couple of years in my teens!

Yes, Amtrak Wars ran to about 7 books i think. It did finish nicely though, rather than peter out.
Dune was made into film, starring Sting I believe. DH has some Dune books in the loft still. My Amtrak Wars stuff went to the Oxfam book shop when we moved house in the summer.

foxinsocks · 11/11/2006 21:20

oh I didn't know about the film!

Sadly, I moved countries a few times in my teens/20s and had to give away all my books . It still upsets me now thinking about it especially as dh had more than 20 boxes of books when we moved in together!
