Not fantasy or sci-fi. I also don't like the Scandinavian stuff or anything about old men climbing out of windows/ Heft etc

I would like something instantly grabby and easy to read. I disliked 'The Goldfinch' as couldn't get into it.

Please and thank you!

I've just finished Into the darkest corner by Elizabeth Haynes. I would definitely recommend it x

agoodbook · 21/12/2014 16:39

I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

Noooooo! Don't say that! I am just starting The Goldfinch. Mo Hayder Poppet is ace, or the Wasp Factory (Ian Banks). Also The Womens Room or the Handmaids Tale are excellent. I couldn't put them down.

Stitchosaurus · 21/12/2014 16:46

I read The Goldfinch yesterday...I was gripped and completely compelled to read it all in one day, but afterwards I did feel slightly let down by it. I second the Handmaids Tale

Southeastdweller · 21/12/2014 17:28

Notes on a Scandal is what I recommend though maybe not if you've seen the film.

snozzlemaid · 21/12/2014 17:37

I was also going to recommend Into the Darkest Corner. I was gripped and couldn't put it down.

Elmersnewfriend · 21/12/2014 17:37

Have you read Gone Girl? It's everything you have said - not a work of genius, but it is instantly gripping and a real page turner.

Luciferbox · 21/12/2014 17:38

Another vote for the darkest corner here. Very gripping

GinnelsandWhippets · 21/12/2014 17:39

The Crimson petal and the White is fab and really gripping.

LoathsomeDrab · 21/12/2014 17:40

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen Kings. It remains the only book I've ever read in a single sitting because I really could not put it down.

snozzlemaid · 21/12/2014 17:40

Just seen on another thread that Into the Darkest Corner is 99p on kindle!

Dollyemi · 21/12/2014 17:41

Spooky story, Sands of time by Barbara Erskine, takes place on a Nile cruise. Read all of hers once I had read that one

DuchessofMalfi · 21/12/2014 18:05

My recommendation would be Gillespie & I by Jane Harris. Alternatively if you like crime novels, then Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series.

WhyTheFace · 21/12/2014 18:07

I've just raced through Gone Girl and Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. Both are grabby and twisty and proper page turners!

Stealthpolarbear · 21/12/2014 18:09

In the woods,tana French

GertrudePerkins · 21/12/2014 18:11

the Woman in Black - Susan Hill
The Little Stranger - Sarah Waters
Gentlemen and Players - Joanne Harris

WowserBowser · 21/12/2014 18:11

The Crimson petal and the White is fab and really gripping

I can't get in to it. There seems to be a lot of walking about. Does it get better then?

hackmum · 21/12/2014 18:20

Have just finished Daughter - good, page-turning psychological thriller.

carlywurly · 21/12/2014 18:25

Thanks snozzlemaid, just grabbed that little bargain from kindle

burgatroyd · 21/12/2014 19:11

Husbands secret - don't let the cover deceive you. Read the reviews. Such a great book!
