Please recommend me a gripping, enthralling book ..

Not fantasy or sci-fi. I also don't like the Scandinavian stuff or anything about old men climbing out of windows/ Heft etc

I would like something instantly grabby and easy to read. I disliked 'The Goldfinch' as couldn't get into it.

Noooooo! Don't say that! I am just starting The Goldfinch. Mo Hayder Poppet is ace, or the Wasp Factory (Ian Banks). Also The Womens Room or the Handmaids Tale are excellent. I couldn't put them down.

I read The Goldfinch yesterday...I was gripped and completely compelled to read it all in one day, but afterwards I did feel slightly let down by it. I second the Handmaids Tale

Notes on a Scandal is what I recommend though maybe not if you've seen the film.

I was also going to recommend Into the Darkest Corner. I was gripped and couldn't put it down.

Have you read Gone Girl? It's everything you have said - not a work of genius, but it is instantly gripping and a real page turner.

The Crimson petal and the White is fab and really gripping.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen Kings. It remains the only book I've ever read in a single sitting because I really could not put it down.

Spooky story, Sands of time by Barbara Erskine, takes place on a Nile cruise. Read all of hers once I had read that one

My recommendation would be Gillespie & I by Jane Harris. Alternatively if you like crime novels, then Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series.

I've just raced through Gone Girl and Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. Both are grabby and twisty and proper page turners!
