I have nothing in I store I want :(
I like crime/thrillers, like psychological thrillers, but fairly tame/domestic
Sophie Hannah, Elizabeth George etc
Like medical thrillers, michel palmer, obin cook
Like apocalyptically stuff
Like sci if to an extent - can cope with a zombie-creating virus, don't like anything that involves lumpy foreheads or pointy ears
Not keen on chick lit, tho I'm sure some of the stuff I read (liane moira ty) overlaps. Hate romance. Hate highbrow thrillers set in snowy Russian landscapes where I have to really concentrate to remember who is who. Hate gritty stuff, Madura Keller, that woman who digs up bones

Oh sorry didn't see there were other replies. Will come back for more inspiration. I'm currently reading darkest corner, not gripped so far but not given it a fair go. I enjoyed daughter, wasn't keen on good girl I don't think.

I remember a book from way back called Simeon's. Bride from a budding author I thought I'd follow up on, but never did. Alison Taylor. Don't know if she wrote any more after that one, but it was a pleasant enough quick read. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a copy (having read it) but if I came across it on a charity bookshelf I'd add it to my own.

I agree with mo hayder 'bird man' and the treatment were brilliant but not enjoyed later ones. Have you tried liane moriarty little lies? Read this recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Have you read The Suspicions of Mr Whicher? About a real crime. I really really enjoyed it.

CMOTDibbler · 05/01/2015 15:23

I've just started reading the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman - crime with a bit of woo (Merrily is a vicar who is on the exorcism team, but this aspect is very well done), very accurate on the local history too

Apocalytpic - try Computer one

www.amazon.co.uk/Computer-One-Warwick-Collins/dp/0714530336

or maybe Last light

www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Light-Alex-Scarrow-ebook/dp/B003TO59QY/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1420471413&sr=1-1&keywords=last+light

Some of J G ballards stuff like Super Cannes, highrise, and Millennium People - I enjoyed all of these off the wall thrillers.

CoteDAzur · 05/01/2015 21:03

That book Computer One looks interesting, but it doesn't seem to be in print.

If you liked J G Ballard's Super Cannes, Millennium People, and High Rise (which are very similar books) take a look at his collection of short stories Vermillion Sands. And if you feel up to it, check out The Atrocity Exhibition. I couldn't come back to the real world for about a week after I finished that book.

BreakingDad77 · 06/01/2015 09:58

Thanks for the advice CoteDAzur Ill check those out, have you got any other authors in a similar vein?

Sorry to hear about Computer 1 not being available, was thinking about it quite some time ago I read it and was because a family member got hold of a copy as they were 'three handshakes' from the author.

CoteDAzur · 06/01/2015 12:13

If you know someone who knows someone who knows the author, maybe you can suggest them to make the book available on the Kindle.

Re authors similar to Ballard - There is one: Will Self. I read his collection of short stories called The Quantity Theory Of Insanity, which was pretty good. His themes and writing style are quite similar to Ballard's which I thought was amazing, until I read that Will Self is a huge J G Ballard fan.

Will Self's book Umbrella was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2012. I read and thoroughly enjoyed this book (and was in awe of Will Self's insanity talent). I think it is as close to Ballard's The Atrocity Exhibition as it is possible to get, and even raises the bar with the stream-of-consciousness style he holds throughout the book with no paragraphs nor punctuation. Definitely one of the two hardest books I've ever read, but also one of the most rewarding.

My Sisters Keeper by Jodie Picoult is a family saga and also a court room drama. A real page turner. This little girl A has cancer so her mum has another baby to harvest the bone marrow; but as the baby grows up to be little girl B, the cancer returns. When A needs an organ transplant, kid B takes her family to court to sue them to retain the rights over her body ie not to donate. Its really interesting but also emotional and has been made into a movie - there is loads of action and very fast paced.

ShadowSuperNova · 06/01/2015 15:21

I hated the way My Sister's Keeper ended. Absolutely hated it.
