I have never read anything by Martina Cole although I always seem to hear her name mentioned. So, I am looking to try one of her books. Are there any recommendations which one I should try first? I particularly enjoy murder/gruesome books

I read one, many years ago, think it was called The Jump. I seem to remember it was quite a good story, but haven't been tempted to read any more.

tessiegirl · 14/11/2014 23:05

This is the thing, I agree AgentDiNozzo that they are really popular...I am just thinking maybe I should read one to see if I am as gripped by them as some people are!!

Thanks for the recommendations - I have read Tess Gerristen a few years ago but I haven't read any of the other three you suggested. Are they all murder based?

I have read a few and they have got much, much worse.

There was couple which I liked - 'The Know' and 'The Take', but the other couple I have read have been dire so I gave up. I loved the idea of Two Girls, but the blurb gives the whole story away.

tessiegirl · 15/11/2014 16:46

Oh dear!! Not many positive views!! I may still give her a go...

Karin Slaughter is also on my list to try

If you can get past the awful sex scenes, Karen Rose is quite good.

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 15/11/2014 17:29

I've never read her books, but enjoyed The Take on TV and definitely not just because Tom Hardy was in it

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 16/11/2014 13:42

I read the first one and won't bother reading any more. It was very badly written, repetitive and cliche ridden.

If you want crime fiction, try Peter James, Peter May and Ann Cleeves.

SnookyPooky · 16/11/2014 19:01

Ladykiller. By far her best book. Read it a couple of times.
Not her usual gangster samey same stuff.

tessiegirl · 16/11/2014 20:12

Yes, SnookyPooky I was thinking of trying Ladykiller...I'm not sure some of her other gangster type stories I would enjoy really.

Ladykiller is definitely the best one.

GeordieRose · 18/11/2014 13:46

Another one for Ladykiller Smile

spidey66 · 18/11/2014 15:46

I've read a few of her books. Her earlier ones were good (Faceless was my favourite) but after a while her books got very samey and was just the same stories with different names.

GetHappy · 18/11/2014 22:08

i agree lady killer is one of the better ones. wouldn't recommend anything recent either...

hooker29 · 22/11/2014 20:33

Love Martina Cole. Ladykiller is fab-I read it in a weekend.
Not keen on Karin Slaughter, but that's just me!
Try Tim Weaver-brilliantly written, but easy to follow.

jollyjester · 24/11/2014 21:45

I liked ladykiller as well and I have to agree her moore recent books aren't up to the same earlier standard.

CateringCalamities · 26/11/2014 15:05

I enjoy Martina Cole as an easy read. Ladykiller is one of the best as is Faceless and Runaway.
If you get round to reading one of hers and enjoy it try Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller.

Ladykiller is brilliant, well worth it.

loveulotslikejellytots · 26/11/2014 15:27

I liked The Life and Revenge. Her books do seem a bit similar after a while though.

Another vote here for Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reichs is also another great crime fiction author.
