How about local care/residential homes. We've got a bookshelve at work with a mixture of all sorts of books (not just large print - in fact very few large print as most of ours have decent enough eyesight). Some of the residents are avid readers and I'm sure must get fed up of reading the same books over and over.

I used to work in a GP surgery. Patients used to bring in their old books (in good condition) and we used to put them in the waiting room for other patients to buy 20p or so depending on the book. The money was collected up and put towards things needed in the surgery.

no room in our waiting room to sell books.

will try the care homes.

You could give them to your kid's school for their fete's etc.

you could sell as a job lot

Oxfam bookshops are always happy to take donations - don't know if there is one closer to you but there is one in St Albans if you are passing that way.

KTeepee · 05/10/2006 18:03

I think lots of the hospitals take them and sell them in the waiting rooms - maybe the QE2 does?

suedonim · 05/10/2006 18:47

If the books are in good condition some libraries will take them for their stock.

We have a mental health bookshop near us (Godalming in Surrey) who take secondhand books. Also at some recycling centres, or bins in car parks?

This would be time consuming but interesting - go to bookcrossing.com. It involves leaving your book in a public place (with website details inside) and you can look on the site to see where it ends up! Heard about this about a year ago and still never got time/energy to do it

WriggleyWitchesJiggle · 06/10/2006 15:06

Bookcrossing is fab. The books end up all over the place. Far more interesting than just giving them to a charity shop.

I really like this bookcrossing idea. Going to try it out this week so anyone working in Canary Wharf, keep on the look-out!

Mimie2403 · 10/10/2006 09:24

Hope it doesn't spark a security alert though
