When, where and how much do you read?

Really interested in this after reading through the 50 book challenge. Some people (RemusSmile) manage to read so many books, in spite of their busy lives.

I'll start:
I read whenever I have a free moment. I always have a book or my kindle with me. I don't have a set time when I always read.

I read wherever I am. At the kitchen table when Cooking, in the car (when waiting for DS after school/clubs etc), next to DH on the sofa whilst he watches TV, in bed before sleeping.

I get through between 4 and 8 books a month. I'm not a speed reader, but keep up a decent pace.

I read every day on the commute to and from work, at lunchtime in the canteen, and in bed every night. The kindle is wonderful, meaning I buy books all the time, from recommendations and free/cheap deals.

cheminotte · 06/11/2014 19:57

Every evening in bed as a minimum. Also in the bath before bed. On the sofa most evenings for an hour or 2 (don't watch TV but download a film most weekends), on my daily train commute unless I'm distracted by MN or meet someone I know.
That's it really unless its an amazing page-turner when I will also read on the loo and during my lunchtime at work. I read less since discovering MN I'm afraid and am not very good at keeping track of what I've read. I have just been off sick and have had the luxury of reading in bed in the daytime!

HappydaysArehere · 10/11/2014 18:38

Never understood that advice handed out by medical people to not read before going to sleep. I can't sleep without reading. Sometimes I feel so tired I think I will just drift off without reading. This lasts a short time until I can't go to sleep until I pick up a book. I read for about an hour or more each night. When I was young I would read for hours on end. In school holidays I would often read all day. Remembering reading War and Peace one Christmas school holiday and then beginning Gone With The Wind. Loved them both.

Hulababy · 10/11/2014 18:42

Both me and DH read in bed at night, for at least half an hour or so. 12y DD reads for 30-60 minutes most nights too, in bed.

I struggle to go to sleep without reading tbh, and as a student, I even used to read before sleeping after a big night out.

I read a lot during the day on holidays by a pool, but not during the day at other times.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 10/11/2014 22:01

I read in bed in the morning, in bed at night, and sometimes manage to sneak upstairs during the day to read a bit more. I also have a 'reading chair' in the bedroom which is very enticing and comfortable with a good light.

Otherwise I'll read at breakfast, at lunch, on the train, in the garden, or wherever I can. I always have a book with me (not a kindle). We are all booky here and quite capable of all sitting in the living room deep in our books. We once didn't speak to each other for two hours on Christmas Day as we were all happily reading our new books.

I read somewhere between one and three books a week but a lot of them are long or longish classics.

ShanghaiDiva · 14/11/2014 02:51

Read about 85 books per year. Every night and whenever I am in the car. I have a driver so no need to pay attention to anything.

vvviola · 14/11/2014 02:58

I used to read a lot more - probably getting through a book every 3 or 4 days.

These days with a very short commute, a 3yo who doesn't sleep through the night, and a DH who actually likes to spend time with me and talk in the evenings the cheek of him I don't read as much as I would like to.

I used to make colleagues laugh when we went on business trips, they'd see me start a book at the start of a flight and have it finished by the end. I loved my uninterrupted reading time (I used to "accidentally" put my seat away from the group Blush)

DuchessofMalfi · 14/11/2014 05:58

I look forward to my uninterrupted reading time when the DC are elsewhere. This may out me but I took DS to a soft play centre party recently and made myself comfy with coffee and book only to discover the other mums were all sitting together for a chat and one came over all concerned that I was lonely. Obviously not readers then Grin. She thought it odd that I was reading.

Ellisisland · 14/11/2014 11:13

I love reading and pre kids would get through a couple of books a week. Mainly on my commute into London. An hour and a half each way.
Now I read less but an choosier about what I read. I check mumsnet for recommendations and read more reviews of books before buying. Also use the library more since I take my DS there. I figure since I don't get as much reading time now I want the books I read to be good ones. No time to waste on mediocre books anymore !

hooker29 · 22/11/2014 20:41

in bed-before I go to sleep, and in the morning when hubby is in the bathroom before me.And I will admit to reading on the loo!..(well sometimes I have to sit for a while waiting for gravity to work IYSWIM)I read loads on holiday-can easily do 6 books in a fortnight-and love the summer when I can sit in the garden for hours with a book.Never read in front of the tv though-can't concentrate!

MyIronLung · 28/11/2014 20:59

I read every day.

In the bath, in bed before sleep no matter what time it is, while I'm waiting to pick up DS from pre school, while everyone else is watching tv. I could happily read my life away Grin

Taffeta · 28/11/2014 22:07

I am a very fickle reader. I have definite reading phases - a new book each week for a few months on the spin, and then nothing, at all, for a few months.

I usually read about 4 books on holiday. I read when the children are in bed, or not around, can't focus enough or relax otherwise.

IsabellaofFrance · 28/11/2014 22:12

I read in the bath, before bed, when travelling with work.

Before we go on holiday I spend much time looking for books to take. In fact more time than I spend on my holiday wardrobe.

SkaterGrrrrl · 01/12/2014 22:28

I average 2 books a week.

I don't have a commute so read mostly at home in the evenings when small children are in bed.

I watch very little tv which is probably how I have time to read so much. Can easily read a novel on 2 days, or occasionally (if gripped) in one sitting.

SkaterGrrrrl · 01/12/2014 22:33

Cannot go yo sleep, no matter how tired without reading, even if its just s page.

Does anyone else read their Kindle in the bath?

Postchildrenpregranny · 17/12/2014 20:41

Haven't yet risked my Kindle in the bath though I do always read in the bath(I dropped a history text book in once -teacher was so impressed he didn't make me pay for it ).I am an ex librarian and 'had' to read a lot to be able to talk to library users .I read anything and everything and am quite fast-sometimes I have to consciously make myself slow down .i can get through 4/5 books a week ,but I don't watch much TV either .One of my greatest pleasures in retirement is going back to bed on a cold grey day with a cup of tea and a book .I can't read before I sleep as I drop off too easily .I have at last got over the guilt of reading in the day time ,and can now bring myself to abandon a book if I'm not enjoying it .I used to make myself finish as it felt a bit rude to
the author not to .But hey, life is too short
My grown upndaughters are great readers .There is nothing like example

CoteDAzur · 18/12/2014 09:11

Pretty much all the time when I don't have to deal with other people - brushing teeth, cooking, on the bus, etc.

I have recently cut my finger to the bone with a huge meat knife and admitted that it may not have been wise to read while using it Blush

TheWordFactory · 18/12/2014 18:00

I read everyday.

Books, I don't have a kindle (though think DH may be getting me one for Xmas).

Always before bed, on trains, over lunch etc.

I also always have audio CDs on the go for when in the car or doing chores/cooking etc.
