Christmas present books for fathers / brothers / uncles??

Hello fellow book lovers!

It is that time of the year again where we all struggle with finding Christmas presents for the nearest and dearest males in our family.

I know they like crime thrillers, but feel it's not enough to give them an £8 paperback! (maybe that's just me!)

Does anyone have suggestions for good books for husbands, brothers, father-in-law, uncles etc etc which make a nice gift for Christmas?

Any help much appreciated,
Dasha

Hi OP

I am someone who often gives family books as Christmas presents. I have a big family and so have to start present buying early as well!

I have just bought by brother a book called A Brief History of Seven Killings by the author Marlon James. It is fact not a brief book at all, but about 700 pages in a hardback, so is of significant size. It is a fictional book but based on the assassination of Bob Marley, and set in Jamaica.

I think he will like it as he has already read the same authors previous novel and loved it. He also likes crime fiction and films like The Godfather. Pretty sure he is a Bob Marley fan as well so covering a lot of bases here!

It has also only just come out, so there is little chance my brother will have already read it.

You can buy it online quite easily, as I did.

Hope that helps!

I've just finished the Bill Bryson One Summer America 1927 and can recommend it. The lindbergh crossing of the Atlantic, Babe Ruth's amazing season, Coolidge and Hoover, the seeds of the 1929 stock market crash, Al Capone, all written amusingly as ever. Yes in paperback, but chunky.

A sports biography?

A political one?

The latest Malcolm Gladwell, whichever that is?

Freakenomics or Superfreakenomics, if not read? Lots of anecdotes.

Something on the weather? I have a great book called Cloudspotting.

If history buffs, something about WW1 or Waterloo, which is next year?

Or find your local bookshop and ask them. If you live in s London there are three excellent ones who would be delighted to help.

I just bought my husband Chris Hadfield, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Life for his birthday. He's really enjoying it.
