I liked The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. I've just discoverd the Lockwood and Co ones by Jonathan Stroud. They are about hunting for the sources of ghosts, I really enjoyed the first and I am part way through the second and I'm really enjoying it.

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Weir is absolutely gripping. It is marketed for Young Adults, perhaps because of the theme of loyalty and friendship, but it transcends the genre, I think. It's about two young women working undercover in France against the Nazis, and it's gripping and devastatingly emotional. I thoroughly recommend it.

The Fault In Our Stars (and the other John Green books)
wonder
We were liars
The universe V Alex Woods

I love YA fiction!

lalalonglegs · 02/11/2014 17:07

The Way We Live Now by Meg Roscoff and, possibly a bit younger than teenage, The Illustrated Mum by Jacqueline Wilson.

Cocolepew · 02/11/2014 17:16

Mickey Bolitar series by Harlan Coben, myster/thrillers.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/11/2014 17:38

Tomorrow When The War Began is a great series.

Also liked Wool which I think is YA.

Hunger games, Northern Lights.

Also Garth Nix's Lireal series.

Someone Else's Life and Little White Lies by Katie Dale. Very much in the upper end of YA fiction but very good reads with some interesting themes to explore. I hope she writes another book soon as she is one to watch.

APlaceInTheWinter · 04/11/2014 11:39

The 'Gone' series. My dm picked up the first one for some reason and I ended up buying and devouring all of them Blush

I still re-read my original Dutch copy of 'The letter for the King' by Tonke Dragt. I was so pleased to see it was finally translated into English last year, so I can share it with my DS when they are a little bit older.
I also just read The Falconer by Elizabeth May, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's about a girl who fights evil faeries in a sort of steam punk style Victorian era. Really recommend that one too.

I feel almost embarrassed to admit it but one of my favourite series' of books is the Ruby Oliver books by E.Lockhart.
They're just so witty. I strongly disliked chick lit- type books aimed at teenager even when I was a teenager and this is absolutely not.

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgp. Bought it for a grandchild but read it before giving it to him. Same with War. Horse. However, my favourite of all time - Little Women and Good Wives - bliss, unadulterated bliss!

ToniWol · 10/11/2014 19:00

Also The Inkheart Trilogy and His Dark Materials, along with HP, Hunger Games and The Tiffany Aching books.

I also have the full saga started by Little Women, and I like Sally Nicholls' YA books as well.

ShyGirlie · 11/11/2014 21:02

just re-read all of the Anne of Green Gables series Smile

Love Diana Wynnw Jones

Anyone tried Sarah Rees Brennan? Demons lexicon trilogy is v good.

Did try the mortal instruments but it suffered from comparison with her (hysterically funny, possibly plagiarised but who cared given the genre) fanfiction.

HeyMicky · 12/11/2014 22:03

The Dark is Rising series. Still my go-to comfort read when I am miserable

LeBearPolar · 12/11/2014 22:10

Chaos Walking trilogy is brilliant: the best YA books I've read in a long time.

I know that this is not a popular opinion but His Dark Materials massively overrated IMO. All that stuff with those elephants on wheels or whatever the hell they were: what was that all about? Some promising ideas but descended into pretentious rubbish by the end.

TweedAddict · 12/11/2014 22:32

Harry Potter
Twilight
Hunger games
Divergent series
Northern lights-(such a shame the film was so crap!)
Lord of the rings
Hobbit
The curious incident of the dog in the night time
Terry prachett
If I stay

Anything by David Klass (You Don't Know Me, The Braves etc). In fact I recently gave my 85 year old dad The Braves - he loved it, but apparently said to my mom "This is very good, but I think it's a children's book." !

bottleofbeer · 17/11/2014 21:37

Kate Cann is good.

Colyngbourne · 18/11/2014 19:03

BR Collins
Neal Shusterman's "Unwind"
Diana Wynne Jones - Hexwood, and Fire & Hemlock
Jan Mark - The Ennead, Eclipse of the Century, Useful Idiots
Aidan Chambers - any of his YA novels
Mortal Engines series by Philip Reeve, also "Here Lies Arthur"

Cooroo · 18/11/2014 19:09

Hunger Games, Northern Lights, Skulduggery Pleasant - I urge everyone to read SP, DD and I loved them. The author Derek Landy is worth seeing if you get the chance.

And of course the books of my own teen years - Noel Streatfeild, Narnia, I Capture the Castle.
