My mind is a blank, and I am floating across Amazon in a daze...

I would like something meaty (long-haul flight), middlebrow and a paperback.

No science fiction, fantasy, and definitely no godawful timeslip novels,: "Ooh, look - I found an old diary and now, whoops! I've fallen into the picturesque past!!" So no Kate Mosse and her ilk drivel.

To take my mind off my squashed legs, fellow cattle and general fear, an absorbing page-turner would be ideal.

Watching with interest.

My recommendation would be The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert. It's long, absorbing, and a page-turner Smile

I Am Pilgrim

Not sure if it will help with your stress levels on the plane, though Smile

Hi

I suggest Munich Airport (coz its a lovely story of a father/son relationship, set at the airport - which may or may not hit the nail on the head? www.tripfiction.com/novel-set-in-munich/ :) )

and The Cartographer of No Man's Land has been one of our top 2014 www.tripfiction.com/the-cartographer-of-no-mans-land-a-ww1-novel-set-in-nova-scotia-and-france/

House of Dolls has also been a top, meaty read; www.tripfiction.com/house-dolls-fiction-set-in-amsterdam/

Hope you find the spot-on book!

Last book I really loved was The Night Circus, but I can't remember the author.

ZaraW · 17/10/2014 18:58

I loved Wizard of the Crow outrageous, insightful and absurd it's one of my favourite books.

punygod · 17/10/2014 19:01

Americanah. Best book I've read in years.

ZaraW · 17/10/2014 19:09

punygod I'm currently reading Americanah at the moment and loving it.

punygod · 17/10/2014 19:13

Great isn't it? I love her stuff. Adored Half A Yellow Sun as well.

ZaraW · 17/10/2014 19:18

It is really good I love her insights on American culture. Loved Half a Yellow Sun also. For some reason never read Purple Hibiscus but it is on my list.

punygod · 17/10/2014 19:19

Funny, me neither.

Wonder why?

ZaraW · 17/10/2014 19:41

I have no idea it's supposed to be her best book. I've added it to my Amazon wish list.

TurnOverTheTv · 17/10/2014 19:48

The Goldfinch or A Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Mummyinamask · 17/10/2014 19:52

Apple tree yard is a good well written page turner - suitable for a flight
(Louise doughty)

Burial rites is more literary, meatier but excellent - review here www.theguardian.com/books/2013/aug/31/burial-rites-hannah-kent-review

Enjoy!

highlandcoo · 17/10/2014 22:48

In order of preference:

The Observations by Jane Harris

The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters

All set in Victorian times, but quite different from contemporary Victorian fiction (which I also really enjoy)

BrendaBlackhead · 18/10/2014 17:15

Thanks, everyone.

I have read quite a few of these, but ordered Apple Tree Yard and Burial Rites. I do like a nice bit of murder to take my mind off things.
